Dear Joyce♦:
I read your response about types of jobs for nurses. Do you have similar information on the jobs that respiratory therapists take?

Sincerely,

Wondering

Dear Wondering:
Here are some of the more common areas in which jobs for respiratory therapists can be found:
  • staff positions in critical care, on wards, or in pulmonary function at hospitals;
  • staff positions on wards in long-term care facilities;
  • staff positions as anesthesia technicians in hospital ORs;
  • staff positions in home care, for patients on home ventilation;
  • selling respiratory equipment and supplies to institutions or home care companies;
  • selling other medical or pharmaceutical products to institution, doctors' offices, etc.;
  • for those that have a Bachelor's degree (or extensive experience and certifications) – clinical teaching in a hospital;
  • for those that have a Bachelor's degree or higher – teaching college or university;
  • for those that have a Bachelor's degree or higher – administration;
  • some RTs may do further training in areas such as polysomnography or perfusion.
