Dear Mark♦:

I've been interviewing for jobs, and I always get stuck when the interviewer asks whether I have any weaknesses. Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Am I Weak?

Dear Weak:

It's a tough question, and one that causes stress for a lot of people, but there are some things you can do to help you through it:

  • Since you know the question may come during your interview, prepare your answer in advance.
  • Try to be original. Don't come up with a response that sounds ready-made.
  • Don't say anything that will put you in a bad light (e.g., while it may be true, telling your potential employer that you're lazy probably won't land you the job).
  • Similarly, don't give a response that too obviously puts you in a good light, because it can often backfire (e.g. "I don't think I have any weaknesses; although, some people have said I'm arrogant").
  • Illustrate your answer with an anecdote, and use humor if you can.
  • And don't forget – despite the fact that you've prepared your answer beforehand, sincerity is important. Whatever you say has to ring true.
