Dear Cindy:

I am a very experienced Registered Nurse, with a broad background of experience, and I want to work from my home in telephone consultation. How do I get started?

Sincerely,

BS

Dear BS:
In general, jobs in telephone triage (also known as telehealth, telemedicine, and telenursing) require individuals who have excellent clinical, communication, and critical thinking skills, who are able to multi-task, and who are comfortable with technology. When this was written, MedHunters was listing 15 telephone triage jobs. In the USA and Canada, other places to look for leads or job openings include: organizations (e.g., the Telemedicine Information Exchange, the Association of Telehealth Service Providers, the American Telemedicine Association, or the Canadian Society for Telehealth); government bodies (e.g., the US Health Resources and Services Association's Telehealth page or Health Canada's Canada Health Infostructure Partnerships Program); university telehealth centers (e.g., to name two, the Texas Tech Center for Telemedicine and the Medical College of Georgia Center for Telehealth); professional journals (e.g., Telemedicine and e-Health); companies that provide telephone triage services (e.g., Clinidata).

Remember that not all telephone triage positions will be home-based, as even in this field, employers often want the nurses to be onsite. And in the case of employers who are open to nurses working from home, you may be responsible for stocking all or part of a home office from which to work.

Good luck!
