Dear Cindy:

Who needs a VisaScreen certificate to work in the United States?

Sincerely,

Would I be one?

Dear Would:
The VisaScreen program came into effect in July 2004, and pertains to some types of foreign healthcare professionals seeking temporary or permanent occupational visas to work in the US. The healthcare professionals who require the VisaScreen are:
  • Registered Nurses ( NAFTA-eligible)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses/Licensed Vocational Nurses
  • Physical Therapists ( NAFTA-eligible)
  • Occupational Therapists ( NAFTA-eligible)
  • Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientists (Medical Technologists) ( NAFTA-eligible after three years of experience)
  • Clinical Laboratory Technicians (Medical Technicians)
  • Physician Assistants
  • The VisaScreen program involves a credentials review of one's entire professional education and all registration/licensure that that one has held or holds, successful completion of either the CGFNS Certification Program or the NCLEX-RN (for registered nurses), and English language proficiency examinations (people educated in English in certain countries, e.g., Canada except Quebec, England, New Zealand, etc., are exempt).
