DEPARTMENT: Rehabilitation Services SCHEDULE: On-call regular; 0hrs/week; Scheduled days and times are contingent upon departmental needs. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology. Certificate of Clinical Competence and a current California license required. Completion of a Speech Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) Internship required. POSITION SUMMARY: Provides diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders for more complex cases. Ensures compliance with standards and regulatory requirements. Oversees work of entry-level staff and supports community programs. The Speech Pathologist II assumes direct responsibility for the speech therapy management of patients referred by a physician. Working under the general supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Director, the Clinical Coordinator, Speech Pathologist III, and Medical Advisors will also evaluate performance. The Speech Pathologist I is responsible for providing services to patients in the acute hospital setting and medical clinic. QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience as a speech therapist (usually two years). Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements. Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of Master´s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited curriculum. Certificate of clinical competence and a current California license to practice Speech-Language Pathology required. Completion of a Speech Clinical Fellowship Year Internship required. Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements. Demonstrates understanding of adult neurogenic disorders, including dysphasia. Valid CPR required. Minimum of 2 years experience in an acute care/rehabilitation setting. DUTIES: Evaluates and administers diagnostic tests and provides individualized treatment to adults and children for a variety of communication disorders, voice and swallowing impairment, and neurological defects. Advises physicians and member/caregiver of test results. Collaborates with physician as treatment plan changes. Provides training for more junior therapists. Participates in developing in-service programs for staff development. Monitors the work of contract therapists and the treatment of patients in non-Kaiser facilities. Serves as a consultant on interdisciplinary teams. Develops, implements, and maintains department policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local requirement. Identifies and recommends opportunities to contain costs and improve services. Assists with community programs. OTHER DUTIES: Patient Care-Upon request for a Speech Therapy Consult from a primary medical practitioner, the Speech Therapist:: Evaluates patients by obtaining pertinent past history, obtaining detailed account of presenting symptoms, and performing appropriate test/evaluation/interview correctly according to standardized or recommended techniques. Interprets evaluation findings to determine the nature and extent of dysfunction. Identifies precautions/contraindications to speech therapy treatment. For those patients not appropriate to speech therapy management, communicates evaluation findings and/or makes recommendations to primary medical practitioner regarding patient disposition. For those patients appropriate to speech therapy management, identifies problems through integration of evaluation techniques/tests. Establishes objective and measurable treatment goals with time frames. Plans treatment to achieve established goals. Initiates discharge planning for speech therapy. Implements the treatment program through direct treatment of the patient, with agreement of the patient and/or family members and coordinates treatment program with other health care professionals. Provides advice and education to patient and family regarding participation in the treatment program, extension of the program into the hope situation and identifies precautions regarding high-risk activities. Regularly reassess clinical sign and symptoms to determine effectiveness of treatment, progress of patient toward goals and the need for modifying goals and treatment. Provides care for appropriate age/developmental level to adults, children, and infants. Devises forms and written instructions as needed. Initiation of treatment in acute setting with possible follows through in the medical clinic or referral to the home setting. Discharges patient from Speech Therapy when the patient has received maximum benefit from Speech Therapy management in the opinion of the therapist and/or medical staff. Provides accurate, timely documentation of speech therapy management. Demonstrates a high level of professional conducted commensurate with standards of the American Speech and Hearing Association and conforms to the canons of the established code of ethics. Is compliant with all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Performs other duties as required. Works with the Rehabilitation Services Director and Speech Therapy staff in the development of programs in specialized areas. Suggests and implements creative and innovative ideas. May participate in two or more specialized patient care clinics. Supervisory Skills Assist the medical staff and Rehabilitation Services Director in administrative tasks related to daily departmental functioning, e.g. policies, procedures, and maintenance of supplies and equipment, record keeping and scheduling. Appropriately supervises supportive personnel. Participates as clinical preceptor with student speech therapists, and other therapy interns as requested. Works with the medical staff in developing programs in specialized areas.
