POSITION REQUIREMENTS Under the direction of the Cancer Registry Supervisor, the Certified Tumor Registrar is to review medical records, assign mandated codes and provide an abstract of all required data related to each and every reportable cancer case seen at Mercy and Mercy Southwest Hospitals.- Prior experience abstracting in an American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer approved hospital program is preferred. - High School Diploma or equivalent, college level course in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and medical terminology and completion of Certified Tumor Registrar program. -Typing and computer skills, Word, Excel, ability to communicate effectively and ability to take direction. - Must be able to read, write and speak English. - Current CTR credentials required.

Summary Under the supervision of the Manager of Medical Records, the Coordinator is responsible for supporting the hospitals American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accredited cancer program by operating and developing goals, objectives, strategic plans, obtains approval and implementation of the oncology program and contributes to treatment planning, staging and continuity of care of cancer patients. JOB QUALIFICATIONS 1. The level of knowledge equivalent a minimum of a RHIT credential and/or two years of Tumor Registry experience. 2. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) designation. 3. Two to three years experience working in an accredited cancer registry program and having participated in one Commission on Cancer survey preferred. 4. Experience in abstracting, coding, and site specific staging. 5. Knowledge of AJCC, ACOS, IDPH, SEER, COC, NCDB, FORDS guidelines. 6. Knowledge of the origins and scientific basis for the current synoptic cancer reporting formats and protocols approved by the CAP and ACOS.7. Knowledge of the mandatory Illinois cancer reporting requirements. 8. Ability to utilize various nomenclature and classification (coding, ICD-0, ICD-9) systems pertinent to various diseases identified by the hospital for data collection. 9. Demonstrate the ability to effectively perform computer skills for database management. 10. Ability to interpret, assemble, present and calculate statistical reports pertaining to frequency, distribution, cancer surveillance and control.

Position Summary: Abstracts data from medical records efficiently to meet productivity standards. Applies knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes, and established guidelines to accurately abstract cancer cases. Performs procedures for identifying all cases of malignant disease from departments of the hospital, Lombardi Cancer Center and the outpatient areas to maintain suspense file. Maintains knowledge of cancer treatment, data acquisition, and related skills through continuing education and research. Answers requests for data from Tumor Registry database. Organizes and manages case finding and follow up materials appropriately. Required Education/Training: High school graduate with knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required. Associate´s or Bachelor´s degree preferred. Required Experience: A minimum of two (2) years directly related work experience.
