DVBIC is multi-site medical care, clinical research and education center. It is a unique collaboration of the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system, and civilian partners. The mission of DVBIC is to serve active duty military, their dependents and veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) through state-of-the-art medical care, innovative clinical research initiatives and educational programs. DVBIC is primarily responsible for support of clinical operations in the DVBIC network which includes 10 military treatment facilities, 5 veteran hospitals and 2 community re- entry civilian programs. In addition, the office has visibility and contributes to the expertise of DoD level related clinical activity related to traumatic brain injury.Responsibilities:1. As a member of the comprehensive clinical team, facilitates initial and ongoing input regarding client and family discharge goals as well as available resources and specifics on funding coverage.2. Stony Brook University Medical Center is also a major teaching facility. The Department of Surgery has nine separate divisions and numerous directorship responsibilities with Stony Brook Medical Center, including that for the 18-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the 10-bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive care Unit, the 8-bed Burn Unit, the Heart Center and the out-patient breast cancer center. There are some 40 full time faculty members and 50 residents and fellows within the department. Department faculty members perform some 5000 inpatient procedures and 2000 outpatient procedures annually. Reporting to the Chairman of Surgery, the Administrator will provide leadership and oversight for the Department of Surgery. In concert with department goals, this leader will develop and implement fiscal and operational objectives that will move the department forward. He/she will identify opportunities for performance improvement and growth within the Department, and have oversight for the implementation of new programs and services. He/she will evaluate and assess practice methodologies and processes to eliminate or reduce duplication. The Administrator is responsible for the management of all departmental fiscal affairs from various funding sources within this complex organization. This person will develop budget proposals, policies and fiscal guidelines that will support growth. As part of the Clinical Neuroscience Center, which includes Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, and Psychiatry, the department diagnoses and treats all neurological conditions including stroke, epilepsy, sleep, neuromuscular diseases, movement disorders and Parkinson disease, dementia, brain tumors, neuro-ophthalmology, and multiple sclerosis. The Department of Neurosurgery provides a full range of neurosurgical services for children and adults to include both surgical and non-surgical methods involving disorders in the skull, brain, spine, spinal cord, spinal nerves and peripheral nerves. The well-renowned surgical team treats traumatic injuries to the brain and spinal cord, removes tumors of the brain and spinal cord, repairs blood vessel abnormalities, manages injuries to the bone structure of the skull and spine, and repairs herniated spinal column discs. The Department of Neurosurgery occupies over 25,000 sq ft of research space, employing eight PhD scientists and 20 staff participating in federally and privately funded research projects. Established in 1964, the labs have bio-mechanical and basic lab capabilities that extend from molecular/cellular investigations to full-scale vehicular crashworthiness.
