The Medical Technologist serves as the Supervisor of the Blood Bank and Hematology departments. The Technologist is responsible for establishing and enforcing safe work practices and procedures in the Blood Bank and Hematology departments and throughout Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&MLS). The Technologist is responsible for the entire Clinical Pathology department on weekends and holidays, as assigned. Develops, coordinates, and implements plans for training subordinates. Evaluates and documents each employee´s performance. Communicates with employees regarding performance, productivity, and administrative matters. Monitors inventory levels in order to ensure adequate supply availability. Ensures compliance with CAP, FDA, JCAHO, OSHA, and VA standards. Establishes and maintains working policies in accordance with accreditation agencies. Responsible for workload information and quality improvement reports. Keeps abreast of newest instrumentation, technology, reagents, and supplies to effectively recommend/justify specific equipment purchases. The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 144 operating beds.Birmingham, Alabama is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education.Qualifications:1. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.(Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).2. Certification: All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). 3. Experience or Education: An associate´s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or an equivalent program composed of at least 60 semester hours, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either: (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and have laboratory training that includes completion of a NAACLS approved clinical laboratory training program with at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty that the individual performs high complexity testing. In addition to the associate´s degree, must possess at least 3 years of directly related, full time work experience. 4. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.5. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Specialty in Blood Banking preferred. 6. In addition to meeting the basic requirements: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level which is directly related to the duties of the position and demonstration of the following professional KSA´s and potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA´s as indicated by an asterisk (*).
