- A.S.C.P. THIS IS A MICROBIOLOGY POSITION.Mon - Friday 7 - 3:30 pm. Every third weekend and rotating Holiday coverage. 9-5:30pm coverage on rotating basis. One year or more Microbiology experience preferredJob Description functions in Microbiology Dept.Microbiology Technologist (MT) position:General Responsibilities: Take care to check specimen labeling and that the correct specimen is inoculated to the correctly labeled media (testing should always be performed on the correct patient). Properly enter all testing performed into the computer and double check for accuracy. Provide timely (one half hour) completion of STAT requests and timely reporting of Critical values. Answer telephone calls quickly and in a courteous, professional manner. Read and sign off on all Procedure manuals in the Department annually (Microbiology, Serology, Rapid Testing, Parasitology, Mycology, Chemical Hygiene, Safety, Downtime, Infection control, and Disaster manuals). Perform morning setup functions including: Recording all temperatures, Cleaning and QC on instruments, checking computer lists for missing or problem specimens and following up on problems encountered. Putting away supplies, marking date received on all supplies, and monitoring items that are running low and need to be ordered. Keeping a clean and orderly work environment, including bleaching bench tops daily. Keeping current in educational topics by reading and attending continuing education workshops. Complying with OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and other regulations. Performing and evaluating proficiency tests (CAP surveys). Maintaining a courteous and professional attitude towards patients, fellow lab workers, Doctors, and other health care workers. Be as flexible as possible in work schedule to cover weekends, holidays, mornings, afternoons, and occasional second shift shortages. Teaching and training other personnel and completing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Cross training in other departments if required by lab manager.Planting Bench Responsibilities: Process all specimen types for Culture planting or send out. Plant to appropriate culture media as directed in the procedure manual. Serially streak all plates for isolation using proper technique described in Procedure manual. Incubate cultures in the appropriate incubator as described in the procedure manual. Set up specimens received in the computer.Serology Responsibilities: Perform all serological and QC testing according to procedure manual. Maintain, run QC, and properly operate Serology instrumentation. Read and interpret Fluorescent antibody tests (AFB smears, Giardia/Cryptosporidium, etc.). Operate and maintain Fluorescent microscope.Culture Bench responsibilities: Interpret and record in the computer all culture growth results according to the procedure manual. Identify potential pathogens based on the culture site and clinical relevance. Perform sensitivity testing on appropriate organisms isolated. Maintain, run QC, and properly set up and run the sensitivity instrument. Perform and record QC on all manual tests such as oxidase, cefinase, slide coagulase, etc. Workup and result Blood cultures (positives & negatives). Operate, maintain, and calibrate Blood culture instrumentation.Parasitology Bench: Process and examine all stool specimens for Parasites according to the procedure manual. Perform and run QC on additional testing for stool samples such as Rotavirus, EHEC, C. difficile toxin, Giardia/Cryptosporidium antigen, AFB stains, etc. Maintain proficiency and knowledge of parasites that may be seen in patient specimens.Mycology: Examine and identify clinically relevant Fungal isolates as described in the procedure manual and reference materials. This is a specialized bench that only a few Technologists routinely have extensive knowledge, but all Technologists are encouraged to learn and gain proficiency in Mycology.Molecular Microbiology: Perform molecular nucleic acid
