Performs post-operative procedures to include transcription of standard post-operative orders into patient medical records; assists physicians with evaluation and management of patient´s status during recovery; reviews vital signs, laboratory and x-ray studies; assists with technical management of patients. Performs patient discharge in conjunction with social worker, pharmacist, and physical therapist; dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner. Specific Department Duties: The Physician Assistant First Assistant works in collaboration primarily with surgeons as well as support staff to provide specific functions in the role of First Assistant for the Perioperative Services Department in accordance with the purpose, philosophy and objectives of the services. During the intraoperative phase, the PA FA practices at the direction of the surgeon. This individual will work primarily within the Perioperative Services Department and be assigned cases by the Supervising Physician or his designee. The position reports to the Director of Surgical Specialties, as well as the P.O.R.D. The PA FA collaborates with the Perioperative Services staff as well as the surgeons to support overall clinical functions in the Perioperative Services Department as determined by the Chief of Surgery. The Intraoperative surgical first-assisting, includes but is not limited to using: Access and evaluate pre- and post-operative surgical patients Generate history and physical from complete interivew and examination Using instruments/medical devices Providing exposure Handling and/or cutting tissue Providing hemostasis, and Suturing Provides Physician Assistant First Assisting Responsibilities for surgeons within the Perioperative Services Department: Assists in setting up surgical cases Acts as Surgical First Assistant per scope of practice of that role Assists in setting up and operating complex surgical equipment to support the cases Participates in TIME OUT for all surgical cases Assists in the transport of the surgical patient to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit Supports room clean up and turn over for cases that they have been assigned to and others as appropriate and time allows Completes other Perioperative tasks as assigned as appropriate. Schedule will be variable Required to share on-call responsibilities for holidays, evening/nights and week-ends Knowledge Base & Technical Skills: Demonstrates depth, breadth and currency of knowledge in area of practice and demonstrates competency in selected technical skills. Problem Solving: Identifies and solves problems effectively. Communication: Utilizes effective communication methods and skills following line of authority as appropriate. Documentation: Documents patient care in a timely, accurate and concise manner. Patient Rights: Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights. Safety: Demonstrates knowledge of the safety principles as identified within the institution Teaching Others: Participates in staff development activities for unit and department personnel. Perform efficiently in emergency patient care situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Professionalism: Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for one professional practice. Adheres to departmental attendance expectations.

Operates ultrasound equipment to produce ultrasound studies in two different fields of study with the appropriate credential i.e. general ultrasound/vascular ultrasound or vascular ultrasound/cardiac ultrasound/echocardiography. One (1) year of full-time Cardiac & Vascular Ultrasound experience.Must be registered in Adult Cardiac and Vascular Ultrasound fields of experience. Annually demonstrate completion of minimal procedure volume in each field necessary to meet accreditation standards.Basic Life SupportThis is a full time/32 hour per week position.
