Qualifications: Ph.D. in radiation biology, medical radiation physics or other closely related field required. Documented experience in conducting independent research in radiation biology as evidenced by published research in peer reviewed journals. Previous experience (usually two (2) years)designing, delivering and evaluating education courses/modules. Duties: As Educator/Researcher: Designs, delivers and evaluates/improves radiobiology educational courses/modules for physicians, residents, radiation therapy students and radiation therapists. Ensures that educational programs/courses meet required accreditation standards. Evaluates residents� knowledge of radiobiology by using various types of assessment/evaluation methodologies. Recommends remedial action to correct identified deficiencies. Provides consultative services to residents and physicians regarding research projects, goals, objectives and findings that will improve the delivery of radiation therapy to patients. In cooperation with other personnel at the Regional Research Laboratory, performs and conducts radiobiology research; publishes research results; applies or supervises the application of new techniques and technologies to selected problems in radiobiology such as immunologic models of tumor growth and regulation; makes research results/findings available to physicians and other researchers through publication, reports and presentations. Provides radiation biology support for patient treatment protocols and studies by providing advice, consultative services, assistance with data collection and analysis, and conducting seminars. As Radiation Safety Officer: Plans, implements, coordinates and assesses the hospital and medical office buildings radiation safety program, utilizing knowledge of radiation safety regulatory requirements; ensures that all regulatory requirements are complied with by assisting department heads and other appropriate hospital managers and personnel to enforce and comply with regulatory and safety requirements, policies and procedures. Assists department heads and other appropriate personnel to enforce safety regulations and reduce exposure by identifying violations/hazards and recommending new policies and procedures based upon reports of incidents, accidents and non compliance. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the radiation safety program by using established standards and required measures; conducting radiation protection surveys, inspections and measurements of equipment shielding and radiation levels; conducting education/training, counseling, and investigations. Works with Medical Center management to resolve and prevent exposure issues. Maintains personal dosimetry programs for appropriate employees and ensures that radiation exposure is within legal limits; compiles and maintains required records according to established standards; investigates and inspects work areas for compliance; maintains user authorizations and radioactive materials licenses; recommends corrective/remedial actions. Prepares required reports and cooperates with local and state regulatory agencies to facilitate onsite inspections. Recommends corrective actions against employers/ departments repeatedly in violation of radiation safety policies, procedures and requirements. Acts as liaison with the Southern California Kaiser Radiation Safety/Medical Physics group; provides expertise, training and support to departments in training and supervising personnel who handle radioactive materials or who work around radiation generating equipment. Responds to radiation emergencies and radioactive contamination incidents by assisting safety teams in assessing and treating victims, conducting appropriate clean up and developing appropriate reporting and follow up. Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente�s Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente�s policies and procedures.
