Possible evening and weekend rotation.EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Graduate of an approved primary care physician assistant orsurgical physician assistant program approved by the National Commission of Certification ofPhysician Assistants (NCCPA). Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Medical Board of California(M.B.C.) and the Physician Assistant Examining Committee (P.A.E.C.). Advanced Certification inspecialty area, preferred. BLS, PALS or ACLS certification required. DEA certificate preferred.Must have a Nat�l Provider Identifier (NPI), required.JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction and supervision of a physician who is a specialist (eg.orthopedics, surgery, emergency medicine), the Physician Assistant II provides high quality,cost-effective patient care by performing surgical preparation procedures, peri-operative and post-operative procedures, and assists in performing surgical and other procedures. A Physician AssistantII may work in the operating room or emergency department in addition to having responsibilities foroutpatient clinic and hospital ward duties. May take call for patients under the supervision of aphysician.QUALIFICATIONS: One year previous experience in the last five years as a physician assistant. May berequired to possess specialty skills to perform tasks required by the specific department (e.g.neurosurgery, orthopedics, etc). Must be able to work in a Labor-Management Partnership environment.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must have intra-operative experience as first assistant forpediatric/general or cardiac surgery. Ability to make complete, accurate patient assessments for apediatric population and to document completely, accurately, concisely and legibly. Possess goodorganizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to work well under pressure. Willingness toaccept and incorporate constructive criticism and direction. Strong oral and written communicationskill, including excellent telephone technique. Demonstrated strong clinical and leadership skillsand the ability to make good, independent decisions. Demonstrated current knowledge of medicationdosage and side effects. Willing to work overtime (compensated).DUTIES: Performs admission evaluation on new patients to include: obtaining basic medicalinformation and history, reviewing patient�s medical record, performing physical exam, transcribinghistory and medical findings into patient medical record, and reporting deviations from normalfindings to attending physician. Provides patient and family with pre-operative and other pertinenteducation. Answers questions regarding surgery, recovery and risk factor modification, procedures;provides blood transfusion information; performs surgical peri-operative procedures; locates andutilizes x-rays, instruments and pertinent patient information. Reviews patient chart notingallergies, pertinent medical history, and abnormal physical findings. Assists in performing surgicalprocedures and other procedures consistent with the standards of care and practice guidelines:Depending on the specialty, may work as the first assist during surgical procedures, start IV�s,and/or perform suturing. Performs post-operative procedures to include transcription of standardpost-operative orders into patient medical records; assists physicians with evaluation andmanagement of patient�s status during recovery; reviews vital signs, laboratory and x-ray studies;assists with technical management of patients. Performs patient discharge in conjunction with socialworker, pharmacist, and physical therapist; dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timelymanner.DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the physicaian assiatant providesdirect care to patients/family members in an ambulatory and inpatient setting in accordance withstandardized procedures or in consultation with an attending physician that includes assessment,diagnosis, and the development of a treatment plan.I. Operating theater: Assist in-patient positioning and prepping. First assist in pediatric surgicaloperations, operate camera for minimal invasive provedures and write routine post-op orders.II. Inpatient care: Manage post-op wound care, arrange for imaging studies and coordinate withpediatric anesthesia, make rounds with surgeon, write orders, and share inpatient responsibilitieswith other physician extenders and pediatric residents social worker, perform procedures underwritten guidelines overseen by MD supervisor, i.e. G-tube change, ostomy dilation, anoplastydilation, central line or broviac removal, I & D abcess, wound irrigation, NGT manipulation. See newinpatient consultations. Perform patient discharge in conjunction with social worker, pharmacist,and physical therapist; dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner.III. Outpatient functions: See new patients, follow up patients and perform pre-operative historyand physicals in clinic independently following pre-set protocols or with direct MD supervision.Provides patient and family with pre-operative and other pertinent education. See consults fromemergency room referrals and discuss disposition with MD. Coordinate radiographic procedures andcommunicate with radiologist and family, manage outpatient wound care. Teamwork and communicationskills needed to develop working relationship with surgeons, clinic OR and hospital and clinicstaff.IV. General: Act as liaison interacting/interfacing with other physicians, pediatricians, nursingstaff, social workers and families on both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Answer telephonecalls, pages, and messages from patients and families. Triages clinical questions/concern calls andfacilitates discussion/exchange of clinical information between staff, patients and pediaricsurgeons. Managing NorCal Clinical Applications including e-Chart, e-Consult, e-RX/e-Refill and CIPSInbox. Participates in Tumor Board discussion and case presentation and conducts inservices forInpatient/Outpatient staff. Other PA scope of practice duties as assigned.
