To work in concert with the Laboratory Director and Manager to provide services to meet patient needs as ordered by medical staff and performed inaccordance with accepted standards and practices in the areas of Surgical Pathology and Cytology.MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES1. Plans, organizes and provides services for assigned section of the Laboratory. - Schedules and supervises assigned staff. - Orients and trains staff. - Orders and control supplies and equipment. - Monitors maintenance and repair of equipment. - Coordinates and monitor quality control activities to ensure that standards and procedures are done and recorded. - Evaluates quality of work performed for accuracy and timely reporting of test results. 2. Aids technologists during short staff, with excessive workload and with complex procedures.3. Orients and trains staff and evaluates work performance, according to the guidelines established for the department, to determine employee competency. Completes annual employee performance evaluations and submits them to the Laboratory Manager on time.4. Participates in development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards. 5. Develops and maintains a Quality Assurance program in Pathology in accordance with departmental goals, objectives and current concerns.6. Submits operating and capital equipment expense budgets on time. 7. Strives to operate section within allocated budget and submits monthly variance reports on time. 8. Participates in interviews of applicants and make recommendations for hiring. 9. Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians other hospital personnel outside organizations or others who provide or receive laboratory services.10. Conducts monthly sectional meetings and submits minutes to the Laboratory Manager.11. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential. 12. Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.13. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental policies and hospital procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disasterplans.14. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the union contract.15. Perform other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervisors 15 - 25 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Develops and maintains quality assurance program for Anatomic Pathology. Maintains reports, records and specimens as required by regulatory agencies. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE Masters degree preferred (Pathologist Assistant) or equivalent Minimum of three to five years combined technical and supervisory experience.
