Works in the Dermatology section of the Carilion Clinic Department of Medicine with MOHs surgeons and general dermatologists. This position is responsible for the processing of skin tissue samples, and consists of mapping, cutting and staining specimens. Interacts with patients and physicians daily. Creates policies and procedures for laboratory functions. Responsible for quality assurance monitoring and compliance with regulatory agencies. Assists with training of new employees and students. Mostly sedentary but may require some heavy lifting. Works with hazardous chemicals, noxious odors and possible exposure to infectious diseases. May require travel between Carilion facilities. Processes tissues specimens, prepares blocks, slides and stains to assist the physician in diagnosis. Maintains smooth daily operation of the laboratory. Ensures quality and compliance in laboratory operations.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREDEducation: High school graduate required. Bachelors preferred. Successful completion of training as a histologist/histotechnician.Experience: Minimum of one year laboratory experience.Licensure, certification, and/or registration: H.T. ASCP, H.T.L. ASCP (or eligible)Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be highly motivated and self-directed. Ability to multitask is essential. Manages the daily operations of all areas of responsibility of the clinical laboratory, assuring the output of quality laboratory information in a timely manner. Provides input into goal and policy development, budget planning, and future growth opportunities as appropriate. Assists other laboratory managers by providing technical assistance and support as necessary. Supports the mission, goals and objectives of Carilion Labs.Direct supervision of employees. Communicates with Carilion Lab staff, physicians, nursing service, marketing and clients. Some traveling by car to other Carilion facilities is required. HistologistCarilion LabsCarilion labs has an exciting opportunity for a Fulltime Histologist in Roanoke Virginia. The Shift is Sunday thru Thursday 8:oo pm to 4:30 am.Basic Function:Performs as a working Histologist processing tissue specimens, preparing blocks, slides and stains to assist the pathologist in patient diagnosis. Minimum QualificationsEducation: High school diploma and successful completion of training as a Histologist/completion of a training program at a school of Histotechnology.Experience: Minimum of 1 year on the job training or completion of a school of Histotechnology. Must have skills for embedding, microtomy, special stain, and machine maintenance. Experience with frozen sections and IHC preferred. Licensure/Certification/Registry: H.T. or H.T.L.
