The incumbent performs work in human nutrition requiring the application of professional knowledge of dietetics or nutrition directed toward the maintenance and improvement of human health. Dietitics is an essential component of the health sciences, usually with emphasis on providing patient care services in hospitals or other treatment facilities. The incumbent assesses nutritional needs of individuals or community groups, developing therapeutic diet plans, teaching the effects of nutrition on health, conducting research guiding the use of diet in the treatment of disease, or consulting on or administering a dietetic program.

The Clinical Dietitian is the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned HBPC clients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. He/she supports the facilitys mission and coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers, the client, the clients family and the community. The increasing complexity and specialization in nutrition requires that the clinical dietitian have expertise in a wide range of disease entities, treatment modalities and drug/nutrient interactions.
