The incumbent is responsible for mechanical ventilatory management, CPAP/Bi-Level ventilation, aerosolized medication administration, bronchial hygiene, airway management, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, diagnostic testing such as spirometry, EKGs, pulse oximetry, bronchoscopy assistance, arterial blood gas sampling and analysis and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting the Supervisor, Cardiopulmonary Services to assure Quality Improvement in Cardiopulmonary Services. As part of the Health care to patients. In addition, the incumbent will assist in planning and implementing effective educational programs for in-services, orientation, continuing education, and other personnel training in cardiopulmonary care. The incumbent participates in the training of respiratory therapy staff, medical students, house staff, nursing staff, other medical enter personnel, and patients. The respiratory therapist assists in updating manuals and procedures, recommending policies and delivery and stocking of all parts and supplies required by the section. The incumbent also recommends changes in the respiratory care services to improve patient care.

Duties include, but not limited too: The incumbent assists in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients suffering from cardiac failure, asthmas, emphysema, shock, pneumonia, and countless other disorders affecting either directly or indirectly the cardiopulmonary system. Duties may consist of continuous artificial ventilation, obtaining blood and exhaled gases, and the administration of various pharmaceutical agents, gases, aerosols, and intermittent positive pressure therapy. The incumbent maintains, cleans, and operates the many adjunctive devices that enable him/her to perform their tasks.

The incumbent works in the respiratory care section performing a wide spectrum of respiratory care functions. Administers oxygen, air, and other compressed gases to patients with both acute and chronic respiratory deficiencies on a recurring basis. Advises the appropriate modality to the physician. This will include nasal cannula, venti-mask, and face tents. The incumbent instructs patients and their families in the proper techniques of cough therapy, breathing exercises, and postural drainage.Performs chest physiotherapy by percussing and vibration techniques. Administers nebulizer treatment and drug therapy as they pertain to aerosol therapy. Cleans air compressors and calibrates IPPB to ensure proper functioning. Ensures proper ventilator set up and management of critical patients on life saving machines. As an important member of the Code Blue team, the Respiratory Therapist performs basic and advance cardiopulmonary resuscitation by giving ventilation, intubation, and chest compression to patients that have had cardiac or respiratory arrest. Draws arterial blood analyses and interprets arterial blood gases.
