Utilizes a broad practical knowledge of treatment techniques and procedures in providing treatment to an assigned number of veterans. Occupational Therapy Assistant administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by an Occupational Therapist, but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of an occupational therapist. Completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data (including medical history), compiles and organizes pertinent information, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing patients status and ascertaining patients need for therapy services. Interacts with the patient and family to explain therapy procedures, discuss treatment plans and motivate veterans and family members to comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities. Incumbent modifies intervention environment, tools, materials, and activities in responses to each veterans response to treatment.

The incumbent has clinical and administrative responsibilities at all three campuses (Dallas, FWOPC, Bonham). Duties include but are not limited to the following: routine audiometric evaluation, interviews, history taking, immittance audiometry, cerumen management, ear impressions, hearing aid fitting and verification, ENG and ABR test procedures, hearing aid repair and maintenance, and family/patient counseling and education. Knowledge of Remote Order Entry System (ROES) for hearing aid purchases and repair is essential. Assists in managing the hearing aid program, maintains clinical supplies, and orders needed items. Participates in the quality assurance program and develops performance measures as well as monitors the daily, monthly, and quarterly workload data. Must be familiar with the workload documentation and data collection process utilized in patient care activities. Must be flexible to meet changes in schedule needs.

The incumbent will serve as a Physical Therapist in Rehab Services administering physical therapy programs to adult and geriatric adult patients referred from all areas of the medical center (inpatients, outpatients, nursing home). Incumbent plans and carries out the full range of treatment where therapeutic objectives are complex and procedures involved require the application of highly specialized skills and knowledge. Evaluations are performed promptly; meets JCAHO requirements, and participates in team meetings and ward rounds. The ideal candidate should have acute care experience (i.e. total joints, open heart patients and multiple medical-surgical problem patients) as well as outpatient care. Home health experience such as LBP, shoulder or knee injury. Desire to support and supervise PT students is a must.The incumbent reviews inpatient/outpatient/Patriot Harbor consults for appropriateness and assigns as caseload allows. Works independently and requires only occasional supervision at the GS-11 position. If assigned as GS-9, would require moderate supervision and direction. The incumbent works effectively with patients, families, friends, and other health care team members in coordinating total care of the patient. Develops physical therapy treatment programs independently and implements programs which affect the patients social, economic and functional well being. Evaluates patients for rehabilitation potential, mobility (with or without assistive devices), transfers and ambulation. The incumbent is responsible for compiling ongoing, routine data pertaining to activities of the PT Section such as workload statistics. Notifies appropriate personnel to assist in maintaining PT section and equipment.

Incumbent performs a variety of duties including: evaluating, developing and implementing comprehensive treatment plans for patients with complex disabilities following diagnoses such as stroke, orthopaedic problems/surgery, spinal cord injury, cardiopulmonary complications, polytrauma, traumatic brain injury, geriatric related conditions, etc. Patients are seen on an outpatient and inpatient basis.

Administers oxygen, air, and other compressed gases to patients with both acute and chronic respiratory deficiencies on a recurring basis. Advises the appropriate modality to the physician. This will include nasal cannula, venti-mask, and face tents. The incumbent instructs patients and their families in the proper techniques of cough therapy, breathing exercises, and postural drainage.Performs chest physiotherapy by percussing and vibration techniques. Administers nebulizer treatment and drug therapy as they pertain to aerosol therapy. Cleans air compressors and calibrates IPPB to ensure proper functioning. Ensures proper ventilator set up and management of critical patients on life saving machines. As an important member of the Code Blue team, the Respiratory Therapist performs basic and advance cardiopulmonary resuscitation by giving ventilation, intubation, and chest compression to patients that have had cardiac or respiratory arrest. Draws arterial blood analyses and interprets arterial blood gases.
