The Medical Technologist serves as the Supervisor of the Blood Bank and Hematology departments. The Technologist is responsible for establishing and enforcing safe work practices and procedures in the Blood Bank and Hematology departments and throughout Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&MLS). The Technologist is responsible for the entire Clinical Pathology department on weekends and holidays, as assigned. Develops, coordinates, and implements plans for training subordinates. Evaluates and documents each employee´s performance. Communicates with employees regarding performance, productivity, and administrative matters. Monitors inventory levels in order to ensure adequate supply availability. Ensures compliance with CAP, FDA, JCAHO, OSHA, and VA standards. Establishes and maintains working policies in accordance with accreditation agencies. Responsible for workload information and quality improvement reports. Keeps abreast of newest instrumentation, technology, reagents, and supplies to effectively recommend/justify specific equipment purchases. The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 144 operating beds.Birmingham, Alabama is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education.Qualifications:1. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.(Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).2. Certification: All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). 3. Experience or Education: An associate´s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or an equivalent program composed of at least 60 semester hours, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either: (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and have laboratory training that includes completion of a NAACLS approved clinical laboratory training program with at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty that the individual performs high complexity testing. In addition to the associate´s degree, must possess at least 3 years of directly related, full time work experience. 4. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.5. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Specialty in Blood Banking preferred. 6. Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pmMajor Duties & Responsibilities: Utilizes creative thinking, originality and professional maturity to perform technical, administrative and professional work relating to physicist oversight of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Biomedical Research using radiation. Develops new instrument specifications and data processing techniques for diagnostic radiological examinations. Utilizes qualitative and quantitative diagnostic studies to evaluate radiation instruments and implement new advanced technology. Performs radiation dosimetry calculations. Ensures proper calibration, safety and operation of all patient imaging and area surveying instruments by medical personnel and researchers. Manages the disposal of radioactive waste. Provides instruction on and supervises the safe use of radioactive materials, radiation machines and radiation detection. Performs inspections of and ensures medical center compliance with federal, state and local Radiation Safety Regulations. Initiates and maintains a research and development program. The incumbent conducts polysomnograms and CPAP trials on patients in the sleep laboratory; scans patients’ health records for medical conditions and medications pertinent to the performance of each sleep laboratory procedure; explains procedures and protocols to patients to insure patient comfort for optimal recording of test; operates polysomnographic recording instruments to obtain an electroencephalographic record of a patient’s sleep; recognizes and annotates normal sleep stages, obstructive, central and mixed sleep apneas, sleep movements, nocturnal seizures, and parasomnias such as nocturnal myoclonus or REM behavior disorder; monitors recorded eye movements, patient limb, and chin motion as recorded by surface electromyography, nasal air flow thermistors, chest and abdominal strain gauges, ECG and pulse oximetry recordings and annotates record when these are abnormal or disturbed by artifact; operates audiovisual recording instruments; scores polysomnograms using computer assisted scoring program identifying sleep stages, apneas, oximetry readings, and movements partially while record is being produced, completing scoring at the end of the study; conducts respiratory related treatment trials with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BIPAP) in patients per sleep laboratory protocol or as instructed by the physician; prepares the patient for tests by reassuring the patient, providing basic education concerning the nature of the testing, allaying fears, or misconceptions; performs operator maintenance of all sleep laboratory equipment and requests maintenance on equipment that he/she cannot maintain as needed; performs other miscellaneous duties as time permits or in the event of patient cancellation and various other duties as assigned.Applications will be accepted from United States citizens nationwide. The Medical Instrument Technologist (Echo) will be responsible for the organization and smooth operation of the echocardiography lab. Scheduling patients, performing appropriate studies and distributing reports to patients charts and to requesting physicians, maintaining inventory of supplies needed for procedures, maintaining cardiology files and videotapes. The technologist will perform non-invasive echo procedures, using judgment in selecting and recording appropriate data for optimal diagnostic clarity and reliability. Prepares for, assists in, and sees to care of equipment following the performance of invasive procedures. The specifics might vary from case to case but generally include providing all necessary equipment and supplies, arranging for a procedure room, scheduling the patient and coordinating the various personnel and services involved. The technologist will also provide cross coverage in the Electrocardiography Lab, performing exercise tolerance testing (including Nuclear Medicine exercise tolerance testing), Holter and loop cardiac monitor application, data collection and electrocardiograms.Please Note: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) Certification is required.

The incumbent administers and performs work concerned with rendering prosthetic and sensory aids services to patients.Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting in planning, developing, and directing the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Program; assisting in overseeing the operation of the prosthetic, orthotic, and optical laboratories including restorations; serving as an advisor to clinicians with regard to selection, prescription, and acquisition of prosthetic devices; interpreting prescriptions in order to make certain that proper prosthetic devices are selected for patients; authorizing the purchase, fabrication, or repair of prosthetic devices; interviewing patients and inspecting prosthetic equipment; analyzing, reviewing, and evaluating the results of various monitors and databases; maintaining a continuous liaison with manufacturers and dealers of prosthetic supplies; and conducting home and vendor site visits. The incumbent performs other directly related duties as assigned.

The Prosthetist or Orthotist/Prosthetist communicates and interacts with physicians, allied health professionals, patients, and caregivers in various interdisciplinary clinical settings, rehabilitation medicine, orthopedics, neurosurgery, vascular care, podiatry, oncology, etc., to assist in development of the orthotic and/or prosthetic treatment plan. The work includes patient analyses in accordance with established procedures for patients with unusual conditions, multiple complex conditions, interrelated conditions, etc.; assessment of the patient for indications/contra-indications, and discussing the assessment with the physician/requesting provider for the purpose of developing the overall treatment plan with considerable influence in the development of that plan; consideration of new and emerging technologies in designing unique or innovative devices to accommodate or treat a wide range of complex medical conditions which include unusual problems or complications.The Prosthetist or Orthotist/Prosthetist at this level is expected to recognize physical abnormalities, deviations, and complicating conditions with potentially life threatening complications. Assists supervisor in the overall management of the orthotic laboratory and provision of orthotics, prosthetics and footwear devices. Assist the professional staff in the treatment and care of seriously disabled veterans to include amputees, spinal cord injury patients, and those with related disabilities requiring the use of orthotic, prosthetic, and footwear devices to take the place of, or assist a part, or function of the body which is lost or impaired. Incumbent strives for continuous improvement of the use of equipment and funding sources in order to eliminate delays of delivery that reduce hospital days and to expedite rehabilitation of patients so that they may return to their daily lives. At the lower grade level, incumbent will perform the duties described for the full performance level position, but with closer supervision and guidance provided.
