As directed and supervised by healthcare professional, performs a variety of patient care activities appropriate to the patient population to contribute to healthcare by preparing patients for visits and enhancing patient flow in accordance with established department policies, standards, procedures and compliance with local, Tribal, state and federal regulations and guidelines MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Graduation of an approved and accredited program leading to a certificate as a Medical Assistant with 1 year previous patient care experience preferred 2. Current CPR and BLS certification, or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire 3. Ability to read, write, speak, hear and understand English with arithmetic skills typically acquired through completion of a course of study leading to a high school diploma or equivalent ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Receives patients, determines chief complaints, reviews medical history prior to exam and updates as appropriate 2. As directed and supervised by healthcare professional, collects and records a variety of routine patient data as part of check in procedures including, but not limited to: height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and glucose screen 3. Retrieves patient chart, reviews for completeness and obtains outside test results as appropriate 4. Performs patient checkout instructions; implements medical orders 5. Identifies and reports unusual findings or observations, clinical symptoms, behaviors and treatment reactions to appropriate healthcare professional 6. Prepares exam room for procedures, organizes instruments and equipment; assists healthcare provider during outpatient surgical procedures, applies/removes dressings 7. Cleans and sanitizes exam room and fixtures by removing soiled materials/instruments, replacing exam paper sheets and wiping counter areas to provide for efficient room turns 8. Performs lab draws and basic tests; seals and packages for processing by laboratory 9. As supervised by healthcare professional, administers immunizations to patients in accordance with physician orders 10. Assists review and reinforce education of basic healthcare procedures and activities 11. Assists coordinate transport of patients from clinic to other healthcare facility; faxes patient information and authorizations to receiving facility to facilitate admission 12. Assists ambulate patient to and from other clinic areas 13. Actively participates/assists during urgent care situations as directed; initiates and administers CPR as appropriate 14. Maintains current all records of medication and related health care provided in accordance with all applicable regulations, licensing requirements and standards 15. Performs visual inventory of stock and laboratory items; re-orders items to provide for availability of supplies for optimum efficient clinic operations 16. Performs a variety of activities to provide for the ongoing maintenance of the clinic’s environment 17. Participates in a variety of in-services and unit meetings to maintain understanding of care plan changes 18. Refers problems beyond standards of practice to healthcare professional as appropriate 19. Participates in departmental orientation, on the job training and quality assurance programs/initiatives 20. Participates in a variety of department and hospital educational programs to maintain current skill and competency levels; identifies and discusses performance or training needs with Supervisor 21.
