Administers treatments and physical agents as prescribed by a referring physician in an effort to restore function and prevent disability following injury, disease or physical disability. Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning, while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.POSITION REQUIREMENTS1. Education: Graduate of an approved school of Physical Therapy or graduate of accredited college or university with a certificate in Physical Therapy.2. Certification: Current State of Alaska license required. Current CPR card required.3. Experience: For inpatient/LTCU position, acute care, home health and geriatrics experience preferred; for outpatient position, sports medicine and ortho experience preferred. Will consider new graduates. Must demonstrate good body mechanics. Must be able to meet the age-specific needs of the patients served by the department.4. Interpersonal: The ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with staff, physicians, volunteers and patients is required.5. Physical: Must have ability to: tolerate long periods of sitting, walking or standing; read computer screen text; communicate verbally with individuals in person or on the telephone; read and write text; and solve complex problems. Must be able to assist others in moving, lifting and positioning patients weighing up to 200 pounds up to 15 times per day.ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Directs the physical therapy department certified staff, including physical therapy assistants and physical therapy aides and restorative CNAs.- Observes and evaluates treatment affect. Recommends change to physician, if needed. - Performs an appropriate assessment on each patient, as related to the therapy requested and provided and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population. - Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching, as appropriate.- Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency of physical therapy modalities.- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies aand addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family. - Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains department cleanliness and safety. - Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. - Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administrative team. - Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients´ needs are met and hospital policy is followed. - Maintains records pertinent to the personnel and operation of the department. - Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. - Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. - Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. - Participates in performance improvement activities for the department and organizational TQM/PI/QA activities. - Meets current documentation standards and policies. - Participates in educational staff performance improvement inservices. Assists with orientation and inservice training for certified department staff members. Participates in guidance and educational programs. - Provides evaluation of certified staff, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating and terminating. - Coordinates, delegates and supervises responsibilities assigned to supportive staff (RCNA, PTA, PTLA, etc.) - Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluating department performance versus budget controls and takes appropriate action to remain within budget guidelines. - Ensures that patient charges are accurate and entered on a timely basis.Participates in infection control, departmental equipment training and organizational safety and fire safety programs.
