Founded in 1961, University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center is a full-service, 125-bed acute care facility serving the residents of eastern Cuyahoga County. The hospital has over 400 physicians representing over 30 specialties who provide expert care in a wide range of comprehensive medical and surgical services. Detailed Position Description The Physician Assistant is responsible for assisting at surgery under Direct Supervision of the attending surgeon and assisting the supervising physician(s) within the supervising physician´s normal course of practice to provide quality care for patients and to increase patient access and satisfaction. Standard tasks to be performed by a physician assistant under Direct Supervision, On-Site Supervision, or Off-Site Supervision if specified by the Ohio State Medical Board include: Assess patients, pre-admission teaching and testing, obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical exams, order and perform routine diagnostic procedures, develop and implement treatment plans, monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, provide instruction to meet patient needs, institute and change orders on patient charts as directed by the supervising physician. Other duties include: Perform patient care activities according to prescribed standards to provide a safe surgical environment for patient care. Maintain knowledge of surgical anatomy and physiology to perform duties. Demonstrate knowledge and competence in surgical procedures to be performed as well as surgical instrumentation accompanying each procedure. Perform patient history and physical when requested by physician. Handle specimens appropriately. Performs pre-operative shaving and other prepping of operative site. Positions and drapes patient as appropriate to surgical procedure. Demonstrate knowledge of medications on the field. Demonstrate skill or knowledge in maintaining hemostasis by proper use of pressure, clamps, ties, suture ligatures, clips or electocautery according to the surgeons preference. Provide and maintain the proper exposure necessary to perform the operative procedure while protecting vital organs, tissue and other structures. Demonstrate knowledge of suture material, different types of skin stitches, and properly close the skin incision in a smooth and efficient manner according to the surgeons preference. Apply the appropriate dressing for the procedure according to the surgeons preference. Follow the pace set by the surgeon, and without delay in the thought process, participate in the procedure to maintain a smooth and efficient flow of the operation. Apply principles of aseptic technique to facilitate maintenance of the sterile field.Position Requirements 1-3 years experience as a Physician Assistant. Demonstration of quality care in prior positions. Included in this requirement is an assessment of any claims or litigation against the PA. Must have computer skills to access patient medical data from University Hospitals mainframe. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook. Education Requirements Formal Physician Assistant training from an accredited program with NCCPA certification. Must be able to perform the tasks relative to the specific area in which the Physician Assistant will practice, as listed in the model Physician Assistant Utilization Plan that has been approved by the Ohio State Medical Board. License/Certification Requirements NCCPA-certified PA (PA-C) or eligible to be certified. Must meet all requirements of the Ohio State Medical Board for Physician Assistants. Approval by the Ohio State Medical Board of standard or supplemental physician assistant utilization plan and supervision agreement between supervising physician and physician assistant before beginning work as a PA.
