NOTE: This position requires at least two years of post graduate surgical experienceA Sample of Duties/ResponsibilitiesInitiate patient orders for admission, pre and postoperative care including diet, fluids, activity, tests, x-ray studies and medications as directed by the physician in accordance with hospital procedure. Assess patient status; participate in the development of a patient care management plan with the registered nurse and attending physicians. Obtain and record detailed medical histories; perform and record complete and detailed physical examinations; record pertinent progress notes in the medical records; prepare discharge summaries for the attending physicians signatures; draw blood for laboratory tests; administer potential fluids, blood, blood products and medications via venipuncture or venous cut down; initiate life saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives. Insert and remove chest tubes; remove left arterial and pulmonary artery lines, temporary Tran venous pacemakers, and pericardial pacing wires; remove sutures; perform arterial punctures for arterial blood gas specimens; insert peripheral IV lines, central venous lines and measure central venous pressure, intra-arterial lines, pulmonary artery catheters, nasogastric tubes and maintain suction decompression of the stomach; catheterize the bladder; irrigate and aspirate endotracheal tubes; perform thoracentesis; record electrocardiograms and inspect strips for arrhythmias; initial BLS/ACLS as indicated; clean, debride, and suture minor lacerations; care for wounds, including dressings, care and removal of tubes and drains, endotracheal intubations as indicated. Provide assistance to the Surgical Team in positioning, preparation and draping the patient; assist in surgical procedures ; assist in closing and dressing incisions; write operative procedure note in chart; write postoperative orders in chart; assist in transport of patient from Operating Room to appropriate care units. Perform other duties as requested by staff physicians or attending, including care of selected patient on both the medical and surgical services. Such duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, surgical wound care; evaluation of patients in the emergency room; performing other duties generally regarded and accepted as falling within the responsibilities of a house officer, always maintaining due regard for compulsive communication between the Physician Assistant and the attending physician or his delegate.
