To work in concert with the Laboratory Director and Manager to provide services to meet patient needs as ordered by medical staff and performed inaccordance with accepted standards and practices in the areas of Surgical Pathology and Cytology.MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES1. Plans, organizes and provides services for assigned section of the Laboratory. - Schedules and supervises assigned staff. - Orients and trains staff. - Orders and control supplies and equipment. - Monitors maintenance and repair of equipment. - Coordinates and monitor quality control activities to ensure that standards and procedures are done and recorded. - Evaluates quality of work performed for accuracy and timely reporting of test results. 2. Completes annual employee performance evaluations and submits them to the Laboratory Manager on time.4. Participates in development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards. 5. Develops and maintains a Quality Assurance program in Pathology in accordance with departmental goals, objectives and current concerns.6. Submits operating and capital equipment expense budgets on time. 7. Strives to operate section within allocated budget and submits monthly variance reports on time. 8. Participates in interviews of applicants and make recommendations for hiring. 9. Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians other hospital personnel outside organizations or others who provide or receive laboratory services.10. Conducts monthly sectional meetings and submits minutes to the Laboratory Manager.11. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential. 12. Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.13. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental policies and hospital procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disasterplans.14. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the union contract.15. Perform other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervisors 15 - 25 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Develops and maintains quality assurance program for Anatomic Pathology. Maintains reports, records and specimens as required by regulatory agencies. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE Masters degree preferred (Pathologist Assistant) or equivalent Minimum of three to five years combined technical and supervisory experience.

NCA and ASCP certification requires a BA or BS degree in Medical Technology or related field (Chemistry, Biology, etc.) and a one-year internship or appropriate experience prior to examination. AMT and HEW certification requires a combination of education and experience (military or otherwise) prior to examination.C. Experience Four years minimum experience as a Medical Technologist in assigned area is required.D. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities1. Works as a Medical Technologist by integrating current scientific knowledge with technical competency which relates to the Laboratory Department. a. The Coordinator demonstrates knowledge and responsibility and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan, Infectious/Exposure Control Plan, Electrical Safety, Disaster Plan, Cor Zero Plan, Fire Plan, Computer Systems, Compliance, Ethics and General Laboratory Policy and Procedures. b. The Coordinator shall be current technically and theoretically knowledgeable of instruments and tests in medical technology for assigned area(s). c. The Coordinator demonstrates knowledge and responsibility for the on-going CQI of the department. d. The Coordinator shall be competent to age-related laboratory values, abuse and communication skills. 2. The Section/Shift Coordinator: a) Prepares a work schedule to provide adequate coverage and effective utilization of personnel. b) Provides technical instruction and training of personnel and/or students in techniques, instrumentation and organization of work. c) May recommend selection, transfer, and organization of work. d) Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel as mandated by Regulatory Agencies and/or policy. e) Ensures that policies and procedures are effectively followed. f) Strictly monitors CQI and quality control procedures within the parameters/goals set by the Medical Director and Laboratory Director and accrediting agencies. g) Ensures that all tests are performed in accordance with the standards established and published in department policy and procedure manuals. h. Establishes, implements and monitors specimen accession, identification, and retention systems, meeting process management and external policies and regulations. i. Evaluates current procedures and maintains a procedure manual in accordance with CAP and other accrediting agency guidelines; reviews and revises as needed - minimum is annual. j. Establishes and maintains a preventive maintenance program for all instruments, and a log system for recording all actions. k. Ensures equipment and instruments are in good operating condition, recognizes malfunction, takes corrective action, and reports to Laboratory Director. l. Maintains appropriate level of supplies and reagents. m. Enforces safety practices and corrects hazards that exist. n. Recommends capital equipment needs and replacements to Laboratory Director. o. Interacts in positive and professional manner with physicians and/or nursing on Laboratory results, timing and availability of test results or procedures. p. Keeps Laboratory and Medical Directors informed of proposed changes in techniques, procedures, protocols and all problems and/or potential problems. q. Participates in continuing education in laboratory medicine, management, and training skills. r. In-services personnel when appropriate or when a recognized need exists. s. May have 24 hour responsibilities. t. Enforces Laboratory and hospital policies. u. May assume administrative duties as assigned. v. Provides general direction and leadership for assigned employees. w. Is responsible for maintaining staffing levels within LUR guidelines and is expected to make necessary adjustments. x. Participates in hospital meetings and committees as requested by management. y. Assists in a variety of job-related duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY:Supervises and is responsible for operational and technical performance of the night shift. Ensures compliance of standards and regulations for the section to assure quality and optimum work flow. Works with the Laboratory Director to assure the appropriate staffing levels and skill mix necessary to meet volume and turn around time demands. Works cooperatively with the Microbiology and Blood Bank Technical Supervisors to ensure competency and quality of testing performed on the night shift. REPORTS TO:Laboratory DirectorJOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1.Works collaboratively with peer supervisors of each department to assure a smooth operation of the laboratory as a whole.2.Organizes and directs activities of personnel assigned to the shift to assure optimum performance of workflow and technical accuracy of testing. 3.Responsible for the technical performance of the staff assigned to the shift and is scheduled in the technical rotation.4.Sets performance expectations for staff to ensure acceptable employee work practices and conformance with Guthrie Values.5.Builds a strong and cohesive staff to ensure a customer focused teamwork culture within the department to increase efficiency. 6.Makes recommendations to the Laboratory Director in matters concerning the addition, removal, disciplinary action of subordinates assigned to the department. Performs annual employee evaluations on all assigned staff. 7.Is the primary lab contact for Hospital Departments and Clients during the night shift.8.Uses good judgment in the communication of all relevant issues, problems and/or developments during the shift to the Laboratory Director. Communicates thoroughly to supervised staff all relevant changes, updates and developments.9.Communicates any problems of a technical nature to the attention of the appropriate Technical Supervisor and works closely with them to resolve the problems. 10.Develops and implements a departmental quality assurance program. The QA program will be designed to monitor areas that may impact specimen testing and results. Provides documentation and reports at least annually at the departmental QA meeting.11.Prepares and submits reports to the Laboratory Director as required to evaluate the departmental quality and efficiency.12.Maintains current knowledge of applicable requirements and standards. Communicates requirements to all staff and ensures compliance of department for organizational and regulatory guidelines with accrediting agencies such as JCAHO, NAACLS, CLSI, Departments of Health, etc. 13.Responsible for all safety issues concerning personnel assigned to the shift.14.Provides technical expertise and leadership to phlebotomy staff, laboratory staff, and hospital staff as needed. Keeps up to date with current laboratory practices, procedures and techniques. Maintains the required level of expertise through a variety of continuing educational activities, practice, competencies and training.15.Performs and documents non-routine and routine automated, semi-automated and manual laboratory tests and related functions such as quality control, instrument maintenance procedures and troubleshooting.16.Monitors supply levels within the departments and makes recommendations to the appropriate Technical Supervisor. 17.Uses good judgment and maintains a professional, mature, positive attitude while performing the job.18.Performs other duties as instructed or requested by the Laboratory Director, Chairman of Pathology or his/her delegated Pathologist.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:Medical Technologist, ASCP preferred or equivalent, with supervisory experience. Must meet the qualifications of a Laboratory Supervisor as defined by the New York State Department of Health, Pennsylvania Department of Health and CLIA. Minimum of 6 years demonstrated experience. Must have an extensive knowledge base and experience of laboratory testing coupled with exemplary communication and leadership skills
