Microbiology Med Technologist Full time 6a-4:30p 5 on/5 off/ 2 on/ 2 off The Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing in one or more sections of the laboratory that assists with the diagnosis of patients. The tasks and responsibilities include:-Processes specimens, prepares reagents, performs testing procedures; reports and interprets test results.-Performs quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.-Verifies analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and references ranges for test methods.-Works with Physician to analyze results and conduct more difficult, non-routine tests.-Serves as a consultant to medical laboratory technicians and phlebotomists as needed.-Orients and mentors new staff members.-Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required Required Job Qualifications include: -MT (ASCP)-Minimum one year hospital microbiology experience required.-Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.-Strong team work and collaboration abilities.-Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, climbing, overhead lifting.

Overview:Performs a variety of laboratory procedures in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision. Produces accurate and timely test results appropriate to specific age groups by accepted laboratory standards. Will work mainly in Microbiology Department including some molecular testing, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Bacteriology, and Virology. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment. Reports abnormal or critical results to the appropriate personnel and notifies department supervisor of issues. Maintains competency in all areas of responsibility. May require extensive standing, sitting, bending, walking and some heavy lifting. May work with hazardous chemicals, noxious odors and infectious diseases. Assists in troubleshooting problems and maintaining quality control and customer satisfaction. May require travel between Carilion facilities. Directs the daily workflow for the Microbiology department. The microbiology laboratory services both as a reference laboratory and a Hospital laboratory. It operates three shifts Monday - Friday and two shifts on weekends. Position mentors and coaches microbiology staff to ensure quality performance. Position oversees all aspects of performance management including regular evaluations for staff. Oversees scheduling. Ensures that procedures and methods are performed according to section protocol, including quality control parameters and result reporting. Adjusts workflow depending on the work volume. Oversees troubleshooting of equipment and software used in work area. Oversees supply/material management including troubleshooting and optimization. Meets the objectives of the organization by maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency and economy. Does budget planning for microbiology area in coordination with lab director. Essential to collaborate with Specimen Management department with regard to specimen delivery, handling, storage and orders as appropriate. Work collaboratively with other testing areas and lab locations on projects to ensure efficient, effective patient care. This position will have time allotted for administrative duties as well as bench assignments. During key times the ratio of bench time to administrative will flex (i.e.: large projects, evaluations etc.). Flex schedule on a weekly basis to meet with night shift and evening shift caregivers. Works collaboratively with Technical Specialist and the medical director and lab director in all aspects of the workarea.
