Position Summary Overview: Handle instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure; assist the physician while performing related patient care duties. Responsibilities: Prepare and assist with arranging the operating room; set up back table, instruments and supplies according to the type of surgery; apply knowledge of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon, having supplies opened or readily available. Maintain correct count of sponges, needles and instruments. Assist in the care and labeling of specimens. Attend and participate in in-services and other continuing education opportunities. Assist in the maintenance of equipment and supplies by inspection, proper cleaning, care and utilization. Use basic technical skills to implement the plan of care; process and handle sterile and contaminated instruments; open and close assigned rooms; operate the sterilizers and labels and read the printout to verify necessary conditions for sterilization have been met. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of a wide variety of instrumentation, equipment, supplies and surgical procedures particular to an operating room. Ability to communicate effectively, be attentive and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Ability to operate sterilizers, microscopes and surgical equipment related to surgical specialties (fiberoptic equipment, electrocautery unit, suction machines, orthopedic tourniquets, air powered equipment, etc.) required. Ability to demonstrate an understanding and commitment to meeting customer needs. Education and Experience: High school diploma or the equivalent. Completion of a formal program in operating room technology or on-the-job training in the technician role required.
