JOB SUMMARY:Works well with other team members; assists ophthalmologist and patients in outpatient day to day office routine. Includes performing the following duties: ophthalmic work up and ancillary testing; assisting ophthalmologist throughout patient exam, office laser and surgical procedures; first assistant in OR; will work in clerical areas if necessary; Adheres to strict confidentiality and continually utilizes excellent customer service skills. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1.Performs as First Assistant in Operating Room.*Preliminary scrub (Scrubs hands, dons cap, mask, gown and rubber gloves).*Washes and sterilizes and drapes operative area of patient.*Adjusts lights and equipment as needed.*May count sponges, needles and instruments used during surgery.*May hand surgeon instruments and supplies, hold retractors, suture, cut sutures, etc. as directed during surgery and apply dressing to wound.2.Will perform the following tests/duties and will stay current with new technology or procedures as they come available.*Check patients corrected and uncorrected visual acuity for distance and near*Applanation, Pneumo or Tono Pen Tonometry*Neutralize glasses by manual or automated lensometry*Auto-Refraction*Corneal Pachymetry*Check pupils*Ocular Motility*Instillation of mydriatic agent(s) to patient(s) eye(s) if required. Requirement is determined by established guidelines. *Performs confrontational visual field testing, color vision testing, Steropsis testing and Schirmers tear testing as required.*Keratometry*Contrast Sensitivity/Glare testing*A-Scan*Slit Lamp Exam*Potential Acuity Meter*Scribe for Ophthalmologist3.Obtain and assist patient in the completion of past ocular, medical, family and social history questionnaire. 4.Assist the ophthalmologist in obtaining and documenting a detailed patients chief complaint and history of present illness.5.Ensures patient chart and forms are in proper order and updates ophthalmologist on all pertinent patient information. 6.Provides patient education, explains surgical procedures to patients as directed by physician and assists patient with completion of consent form for surgical procedures.7.Prepares patients and assists ophthalmologist with office surgery and laser procedures.8.Collect and calculate diagnostic data; e.g. calculation of intraocular lens power for surgery.9.Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates proper plan of action.10.Responsible for the preparation and review of required documentation for surgical charts (i.e. orders, test requests, labs, etc.)11.Remain current with documentation guidelines, CPT and ICD 9 codes, modifiers and acceptable ophthalmology abbreviations and terminology.12.Responsible for performing basic maintenance of exam room and ancillary equipment.13.Responsible for documentation, tracking and reporting on the surgical co-management of patients.14.Responsible for performing standard dictation according to physicians instructions. Responsible for ensuring all dictation is performed and reviewed by physician.15.Will perform the following ancillary testing duties as needed by the department:*Visual Field Testing*Scanning laser Ophthalmoscopy*Corneal Topography*Optical Coherence Tomography*Fundus Photography16.Notify patients via telephone of test results as directed by ophthalmologist. Phone in prescriptions to pharmacies as directed by ophthalmologist. Performs liaison duties between patients, referring physicians, and hospital staff.17.Maintain inventory of supplies and pharmaceutical products in exam rooms as directed by the ophthalmologist and supervisor. Cleans exam rooms as needed. Checks expiration of medications, contacts and supplies and follow-up as appropriated and in accordance with established guidelines and policies.18.Accurately completes lab requests, culture and specimen requests. Enters Lab ticket information into the Computer. 19.Assists in departmental operations by filling in for other ophthalmic assistants (may assist Optometrists) or, if necessary, for clerical staff. 20.Assists in the orientation of new employees, and recognizes and utilizes opportunities to teach other staff members.21.Reviews and monitors ophthalmologist schedule for efficiency, ensures information such as referrals are present, files correspondence and completes forms and material of general nature.22.Demonstrates compliance with all provisions of safety rules and other policies and procedures.23.Will coordinate vacation with ophthalmologists schedule. In the ophthalmologists absence and after vacation time has been exhausted, the employee, with approval, may take leave without pay or remain on the job and be floated if coverage is needed.24.Will travel to regional offices as needed as schedule dictates.25.Attends required staff and educational meetings as requested.26.Supports philosophy of department and organization.27.Additional duties and responsibilities as required by the Ophthalmologist, Supervisor or Practice Administrator.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:Certification as Ophthalmic Assistant, Technician or Surgical Ophthalmic Assistant; Registered Nurse; Licensed Practical Nurse. Individuals with ophthalmic assisting experience may apply; certification will be required within the first year of employment.
