This position provides support for patient care by assisting Orthopaedic Surgeons in a variety of activities to include preparation, application and removal of casts from patients. Facilitates patient care for outpatients primarily and inpatients as needed. Also performs non-patient care activities such as department stocking, ordering supplies, and equipment preparation and maintenance.Qualifications include:1-2 years experience as an Ortho TechnicianHigh school diploma or equivalent.CPR certified.Hours: 8:30am to 5pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Purpose of Job Assists orthopaedic provider to apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints, slings, and orthopaedic appliances. Maintains materials and supplies needed to perform orthopaedic procedures.This position consistently supports compliance and Kaiser Permanente’s Code of Conduct by adhering to federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements and Kaiser Permanente’s policies and procedures. In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives. Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providers and vendors.Duties and Responsibilities:1. Performs patient care procedures including care of wounds, removal of sutures, preparation of traction pins, and assistance to provider with their insertion.2. Applies and adjusts casts, slings, and related orthopaedic appliances as directed and under general supervision of an orthopaedic provider; may apply splints as a first aid measure before evaluation.3. Operates a fluoroscan to obtain patient x-rays as directed and under general supervision of an orthopaedic provider only if holder of a limited radiology technologist certificate.4. Removes casts or appliances as directed.5. Responds to patient reports of swelling, pain, and related concerns and refers to provider as appropriate.6. Teaches patients how to move with casts. Instructs patients regarding movement and exercise, walking with crutches, care of cast, etc. according to nursing practice protocols.7. Assists patients to and from the clinical area as necessary.8. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.9. Orders, stocks, and maintains tools, equipment, and supplies used in orthopaedic department.10. Answers telephone, makes appointments, and provides administrative support in orthopaedic department.11. Performs other related duties as directed.12. Communicates relevant patient information to the provider and healthcare team to ensure effective care flowMinimum QualificationsExperience: Two years experience as an orthopaedic cast technician, OR completion of a training course as a medical corpsman, OR completion of the Kaiser Permanente sponsored cross training program with successful documented demonstration of identified competencies required.Education and Training: High school diploma or GED required. License, Certifications, Other Credentials: Certification as an orthopaedic technician preferred. CPR certification required. Annual training in radiation safety requiredOther Qualifications: Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software.
