Pathology Assistant

Purpose: To assist the pathologists by dissecting and describing all surgical pathologyspecimens for histologic processing and coordinating case distribution for histologicprocessing in the gross dissection lab.This position consistently supports compliance and Kaiser Permanente�s Code of Conduct by adheringto federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements and KaiserPermanente�s policies and procedures.In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating servicebehaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission aswell as specific departmental/organizational initiatives. Also accountable for consistentlydemonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior andculturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providersand vendors.Accountabilities:1. Prepare cases to be grossed-in by logging in surgical pathology specimens in the tissuelaboratory, assigning succession numbers, checking tissue-examination forms and specimens forcompleteness and accuracy, and labeling specimen cassettes with accession numbers by differentiationaccording to varied specimen requirements.2. Assists the pathologists in the assurance that all anatomic pathology departmental copies ofreports and necessary tissue blocks are maintained in chronological/numerical order and according toappropriate storage requirements. Clarifies, resolves, and documents problems involving pathologyreports, tissue blocks, or glass slides.3. Files and maintains microscope slides and paraffin blocks of surgical pathology, cases.4. Serves as a resource to clinical staff by answering questions or inquiries, i.e. pathologydiagnosis within their scope of practice.5. Maintains instrumentation, performs formalin monitor, prepares stains and maintains pertinent documentation.6. Assists in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods, quality assurance monitors,and instrumentation.7. Participates in the training or orientation of staff and students.8. Gathers block materials and prepares for shipping items sent for consultation or as requested byproviders.9. Coordinates special stains; re-cuts blocks and secures and distributes reports.10. Coordinates the distribution of surgical pathology reports to physicians and medical records withthe Pathology Secretary.11. Perform other related duties as directed.Relevant Years of Experience:- Two year of previous work experience in a pathology assistant capacity required.- Baccalaureate degree required- Certified as a Pathologist Assistant from a national accrediting body (i.e. American Society forClinical Pathologists) required or be an M.D. with a background in anatomic pathology.

Position Summary: The incumbent in this position performs a variety of functions as pertains to the performance of autopsies and the autopsy suite. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital´s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.Required Education/Training: High School Graduate or equivalent (GED). AA degree in histology, cytology, gross anatomy and physiology or related science preferred.Required Experience: Incumbent can be trained on the job. Previous experience as an autopsy assistant or histotechnologist desirable. Must be able to learn or have basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, instrumentation and legal aspect of consent for performing autopsies. Good interpersonal skills. Mature individual able to be empathetic to the needs of bereaved families/significant others.

Under the general supervision of a pathologist, provides various services in both surgical and autopsy pathology. The primary responsibilities include gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens and the performance of post mortem examinations. This includes following Bassett´s Statement of Ethic and Policy on compliance.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:* Bachelors Degree with ASCP certification or graduation from an accredited Pathologists Assistant program is required* 2 years Pathologists Assistant training in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology* Occasional prolonged standing or sitting* Regular lifting of supplies reagents and bodies* Color blindness screening is required* Exposure to infection from disease bearing specimens, to the risk of blood borne diseases, to electrical and radiant energy hazards, to odorous chemicals and specimens and to carcinogenic substances.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in a non science, major with an Associate Degree in BiologicScience. Graduate from a National Accrediting agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), accredited pathologist´s assistant training program and/or a current Fellow of the American Association of Pathologist´s Assistants (AAPA). Fellowship must be maintained for as long as oneworks in this position. When National Certification of Pathologist´s Assistants is implemented, onemust achieve and maintain certification for as long as one works for this position. Courses Required: Human Anatomy, Basic Human Physiology, Basic Human Pathology, Specimen Photography, Autopsy Pathology, Gross dissection and description and Specimen Processing, Basic Medical Microbiology including; Infection Control, Basic Histology and Histotechnology Techniques, TissueProcessing Requirements, Strains and Frozen Section Techniques, Basic Principles of Laboratory Management, Safety and Organization, Medical terminology, Embryology and Forensic principles andtechniques. Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary toprovide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to customers,contracted providers, and vendors.Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in Pathology Department. Experience with CoPathPathology information system.Duties: Perform postmortem examinations and descriptions. Process surgical Pathology specimensincluding dissection, description and embedding for Pathologist´s diagnosis. Preparation of fineneedle aspiration specimens. Preparation of frozen sections for pathologist´s interpretation.Quality control and management of equipment and supplies in the surgical Pathology laboratory andautopsy suite. Quality improvement activities and projects for the Pathology Department Upholdstandards of practice, policies and procedures as contained in the Department´s Policy and Procedure Manuals in the surgical pathology and Autopsy service. Continued education and skills assessmentconcurrent with established and new practices and techniques as applicable in surgical and autopsypathology. Ability to conduct gross dissection procedures utilizing surgical instruments.Written communication skills to prepare case summaries and interpretations, and reports of laboratory activities.Experience:Three to six months job related experience to become familiar with a variety of procedures, techniques and equipment used in performing activities.
