Pathologists Assistant As one of the largest and busiest Surgical Pathology labs in New York we set the standard for our field and provide our team with a high level of clinical interaction. Our laboratory enables expedited processing and includes a large volume of diversified specimens. In the highly versatile role of Pathologists Assistant and under the guidance of the Director of Anatomic Pathology, you will perform Pathologist extender functions in the Surgical Pathology Laboratory. Your responsibilities will include: assessment of specimen volume and complexity followed by triaging of specimens amongst cutting room personnel, technician(s) and residents; examination, dissection, and dictation of all types of surgical specimens including the most complex cases; cutting and staining of frozen sections; developing a training curriculum for Pathology residents and Pathology staff so there is technical uniformity in the handling of Surgical Pathology specimens; supervision including scheduling and performance evaluation of gross room technical staff and accession room staff; QA representative responsible for identifying, addressing and monitoring all work flow and quality control issues related to the gross room and accession room. Eligible applicants must be certified by the American Association of Clinical Pathologists as PA (ASCP), be a Fellow of the American Association of Pathologists Assistants, and be licensed as a laboratory professional by the New York State Office of Professions. Position Summary: The incumbent in this position performs a variety of functions as pertains to the performance of autopsies and the autopsy suite. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital´s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.Required Education/Training: High School Graduate or equivalent (GED). AA degree in histology, cytology, gross anatomy and physiology or related science preferred.Required Experience: Incumbent can be trained on the job. Previous experience as an autopsy assistant or histotechnologist desirable. Must be able to learn or have basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, instrumentation and legal aspect of consent for performing autopsies. Good interpersonal skills. Mature individual able to be empathetic to the needs of bereaved families/significant others.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in a non science, major with an Associate Degree in BiologicScience. Graduate from a National Accrediting agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), accredited pathologist´s assistant training program and/or a current Fellow of the American Association of Pathologist´s Assistants (AAPA). Fellowship must be maintained for as long as oneworks in this position. When National Certification of Pathologist´s Assistants is implemented, onemust achieve and maintain certification for as long as one works for this position. Quality improvement activities and projects for the Pathology Department Upholdstandards of practice, policies and procedures as contained in the Department´s Policy and Procedure Manuals in the surgical pathology and Autopsy service. Continued education and skills assessmentconcurrent with established and new practices and techniques as applicable in surgical and autopsypathology. RIH is the states largest general acute care hospital, the regions Level I Trauma Center, and the largest teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.Under the general supervision of the Lead Pathologists Assistant and attending pathologist, prepares surgical and autopsy specimens for microscopic examination, which includes gross description and dissection. Assists in the performance of postmortem examinations.Processes surgical pathology specimens including properly fixing, cutting, photographing, and sectioning of surgical specimens, including frozen sections and utilization of the laboratory information system according to standard operating policies and procedures.Performs postmortem examination under the supervision of the pathologist and assists medical students in performing autopsies.Works closely with residents and medical students, orienting and teaching.Maintains inventory and equipment including preventative maintenance tasks.Notifies in a timely manner either the chief resident, fellow, Director of Surgical Pathology or Director of the residents program when work is beginning to back up.Ensures a clean and safe work environment by maintaining adequate supplies and instruments and monitoring the cleanliness of work-stations, including frozen section area. Ensures equipment is in good working order.Monitors hours and activities of grossing staff.Performs other duties as assigned, such as accessioning, billing, and coding.Requirements:Bachelors Degree in biology and successful completion of an accredited pathologists assistant program. Pathologists Assistant certification preferred.Professional knowledge and very high level of analytical ability to perform postmortem and tissue examinations interpret findings and determine data to be forwarded to pathologist. Knowledge of anatomic pathology computer system functions. Ability to conduct gross dissection procedures utilizing surgical instruments.Written communication skills to prepare case summaries and interpretations, and reports of laboratory activities.Experience:Three to six months job related experience to become familiar with a variety of procedures, techniques and equipment used in performing activities.
