MED CARE LINE - PULMONARY SECTION, DIAGNOSTIC SLEEP LABORATORY

The successful candidate conducts polysomnograms and CPAP trials on patients in the sleep laboratory; scans patients health records for medical conditions and medications pertinent to the performance of each sleep laboratory procedure; explains procedures and protocols to patients to insure patient comfort for optimal recording of test; operates polysomnographic recording instruments to obtain an electroencephalographic record of a patients sleep; recognizes and annotates normal sleep stages, obstructive, central and mixed sleep apneas, sleep movements, nocturnal seizures, and parasomnias such as nocturnal myoclonus or REM behavior disorder; monitors recorded eye movements, patient limb, and chin motion as recorded by surface electromyography, nasal air flow thermistors, chest and abdominal strain gauges, ECG and pulse oximetry recordings and annotates record when these are abnormal or disturbed by artifact; operates audiovisual recording instruments; scores polysomnograms using computer assisted scoring program identifying sleep stages, apneas, oximetry readings, and movements partially while record is being produced, completing scoring at the end of the study; conducts respiratory related treatment trials with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BIPAP) in patients per sleep laboratory protocol or as instructed by the physician; prepares the patient for tests by reassuring the patient, providing basic education concerning the nature of the testing, allaying fears, or misconceptions; performs operator maintenance of all sleep laboratory equipment and requests maintenance on equipment that he/she cannot maintain as needed; performs other miscellaneous duties as time permits or in the event of patient cancellation and various other duties as assigned.

We are seeking a licensed Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) for care and treatment of Veterans hospitalized within the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, American Lake Division (Tacoma, WA). Position is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8:00pm to 6:00am. Services may be required on holidays. We are currently seeking candidates for employment at our state-of-the-art sleep laboratories. We have laboratories in Boston and Waltham. The Boston Sleep Lab is located in the main hospital and is a three-bed unit and our Waltham Sleep Lab is a two-bed unit. Most studies are conducted at night and are performed predominantly on children and adolescents and occasionally on infants.Experienced Sleep Techs are desired. RPSGT registered or registry-eligible applicants are preferred. If you are currently working with children or have always wanted to do so, this is an outstanding opportunity for you to develop expertise in this rapidly growing and extremely rewarded area of sleep medicine.Position Details:Performs polysomnograms according to standards and protocols of the laboratory; routine and specialized PSG, MSLT, and other specialized procedures as requested and assigned on both adult and pediatric patients. Calibrates chart recorders, and all ancillary recording instruments. Adjusts controls of recording equipment and changes parameters of instrumentation to produce optimal PSGs;Administers oxygen and titrates nasal CPAP as prescribed by the patients physician and according to laboratory protocols and procedures. Instructs the patient in the proper use and care of nasal CPAP equipment in the home;Scores PSG recordings as assigned according to established laboratory protocols, norms, and procedures. Prepares all necessary data, audio, video, forms, history and necessary material to accompany PSG and other studies for interpretation by polysomnographer and laboratory physicians.Minimum Knowledge and Skills:Job duties and positions for EEG, EP, LTM, EEG and Sleep requires a high school education and graduation from electroneurodiagnostic technology training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or equivalent formal training. A minimum of one three years experience in clinical EEG, EP and related area is required. Some college level course work is preferable and for some positions may be required. Registration by The American Board of Registration of EEG and EP Technologists, Inc. (ABRET) is preferred. For those technologists working in the Sleep lab, registration by BRPT is preferred;Work requires knowledge of appropriate actions to take during emergency situations and insures patient safety (electrical) at all times;Work requires knowledge of basic infection control standards relating to patient and equipment including electrodes;Work requires basic knowledge of neuroanatomy and physiology, basic electronics and electrical safety, general knowledge of EEG instrumentation, pattern recognitions, and various medical and pharmacological conditions that influence the EEG. Also requires basic understanding of video, audio and telemetry recording equipment. Skills in neuro intraoperative monitoring required. Knowledge of special devices for polysomnographic recordings, i.e.; CPAP, oximetry, and pulmonary equipment required for Sleep technologists.
