The human heart is very complex. One elderly gentleman, who was an ICU patient for several days before and after heart surgery, was so sweet. He had a sparkle in his eyes. He greeted me with a warm smile, no matter how ill he felt, no matter what he knew I would have to do to him. He talked about his grandchildren, and asked about mine. After his bypass, his color returned and he was clearly on the mend. As I prepared him for his move to a regular ward, he asked me to shut the door. Then, with a serious whisper, he told me how much he appreciated my kindness, my care. Then came the offer. Not one I could ever anticipate. He patted my arm and whispered, "You've been so nice to me, I want to do something good for you. I'll give you a free contract. On anyone you want. You just tell me who – you got the deal. Free." As he was wheeled out, I desperately tried to remember my conversations with him, hoping I had never said anything negative about anyone in his presence!
