I'm interested in becoming a pharmaceutical representative. I've heard that people can make a lot of money in the industry, but I've also heard that the opposite, because of changes in the way the pharmaceutical industry is regulated. Are the days of the massive perks for pharmaceutical reps numbered? Sincerely, Future in Pharming? Dear Future: Regulation change may affect earnings somewhat, but how much remains to be seen. After all, pharmaceutical companies are among the most profitable in the world, and with an aging population, new (and expensive) drug development, advertising that encourages people to take drugs that they may or may not need … Looking at sample numbers, there is definitely money in the field! The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says that in May 2004, pharmaceutical sales reps had a median hourly earning of $30.69. Based on a 40-hour workweek, this is $62,835 per year. And in doing an informal sample of some pharmaceutical sales jobs that post salaries, here are just a few I've found from various companies and locations in the USA. As you see, it can vary quite a bit: 3+ years experience: • base $65,000-$75,000
+ commission $35,000
• base $50,000-$60,000
+ commission $20,000
• base $50,000-$60,000
+ perks & bonus $80,000
• base $55,000-$90,000
+ bonus $20,000 At least 1 year experience • base $60,000-$75,000
+ bonus $30,000
• base $50,000-$65,000
+ bonus $20,000 No experience or unspecified experience • base $50,000-$52,000
+ commission: $35,000
• base $48,000-$72,500
