Dear Cindy,

What kind of career advancement is available for radiologic technicians (clinical and non-clinical)? Are there other education and/or certification requirements that I need in order to further my career?

Thanks, Brian

Dear Brian,

Check out the Web site of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, www.asrt.org. It has a career section that talks about salaries and specialties in the field. With experience, you can move up into supervisory roles. You may also want to become proficient and licensed in other modalities, such as mammography, CT or MRI – that will boost your earning power. Training is usually on the job, although ultrasound may require additional schooling.

Most employers want certification, if you don't already have it, and some states require certification as one of the requirements for licensure.

I'm not clear from your question whether you are a radiologic technician currently or want to be one. If it's the latter, be sure you make sure you enroll in an educational program that is accredited. You can search for one here.

Also, I am answering this question on the basis that you are seeking information about radiologic technologists, the preferred term for those who perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as X-rays. While sometimes the terms are used interchangeably, radiologic technicians can be those who maintain the equipment and supplies, or those with a limited permit. Limited permit RTs may work in orthopedic offices and the salaries are lower and advancement opportunities fewer.
