Dear Cindy:

Where can I go to find a professional career counselor and get advice about my résumé, options, etc.? I am in healthcare, and I have an advanced degree.

Sincerely,

Looking

Dear Looking:

You have several options.

The Association of Career Professionals International is a governing body for individuals, companies, and organizations that provide career services, and they list members by territory and subspecialty. (There are 14 subspecialties in total, and some examples include assessment, coaching, and executive recruitment.) There is also the National Career Development Association, which has email links to (and in some cases websites of) member career professionals. You can look around these sites and see if you find someone you like.Depending on when you graduated, you may be able to take advantage of your school's career center, since they usually offer free career counseling services to recent graduates and alumni. (As Mark wrote in Career Counselors , a friend of his used his university's service and was counseled by a management consultant who ran his own boutique counseling company.)Another option may be to speak with an executive search firm that has healthcare clients (e.g., see members of the Association ofExecutive Search Consultants) and/or a healthcare recruitment firm. After all, while they may prefer that they are able to recruit you, since then they would be paid by the employer who hires you, they also typically assess you well to see where your interests and expertise lie, and can suggest a range of options to you from among their clients and, sometimes, will refer you elsewhere if they can't help you. Also, government bodies also have some assistance in this area, such as CareerOneStop, which is sponsored by the US Department of Labor, and offers career resources and workforce information; however, this may be too general for your needs.
