Dear Cindy – Post-Loan Shakedown!

Dear Cindy:

My supervisor and I are friends, and we have known each other for some time (even before I started working with her). A few months ago, she loaned me some money. At the time, she knew that it would take awhile for me to pay her back. Now she's asking me to do things (e.g., work extra hours, take the worst shifts) that I didn't have to do before. All of this is perfectly correct from a professional standpoint, but whenever I protest, she uses the loan as leverage. What should I do?

Sincerely,

ST

Dear ST:

You know the answer to this one: Pay her back now!

Loans change relationships. I've quoted Polonius from Hamlet before, and I'll do so again: "Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend …"

See what you open yourself up to when you borrow money from friends and/or bosses? And what's worse, see what happens when you don't have a written agreement? What's "awhile"? Your view of "awhile" and her view of "awhile" may be two very different things. She could be really annoyed that you haven't paid her yet, and feels that you're taking advantage of her, and is therefore trying to exact some revenge. Maybe she's hoping that if she makes things unbearable enough, you'll finally pay her back.

Pay her back now!

Two final items – an observation and a question:

• Your line "Now she's asking me to do things … that I didn't have to do before" makes it sound like you had a sweet deal before, thanks to your personal relationship, and now you're being asked to row with your fellow slaves and don't like it.
• Are you planning to stay friends with a "friend" who practices extortion?
