I'm considering taking a job as a radiographer where my mother is the manager. My brother says that I shouldn't take it. What do you think? Sincerely, Path of Peril? Dear PoP: First, I'm assuming that hospital policy allows such close relatives to work in the same department. That being said, much depends on the relationship you currently have with your mother. But even if it is a healthy relationship, there are several potential problems: • Your mother may try
so hard not to show favoritism that she expects
more of you (in terms of work volume and quality)
than of your coworkers.
• Your mother may unconsciously
show favoritism, which will cause problems between
you and your coworkers, and your mother and her
other staff.
• You may have difficulty
discussing departmental and work-related problems
with your boss because she's your mother. (And
the flip side of this is that she may have trouble
taking criticism from you.)
• Your coworkers may
not feel comfortable around you, especially when
discussing problems at work or complaints about
the boss – your mother.
• Your coworkers may
try to use you as a conduit to your mother, and
this will put you in a difficult position, especially
if you disagree with whatever information they
want you to transmit. ♦We're now having some of our other writers help out answering the "Dear Cindy" questions. Enjoy! Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say? Tell us what you think!
