Dear Cindy – Past or Present?

Dear Cindy:

I have a quick question. I'm working on updating my résumé, and I was wondering if I should use past tense or future tense for my work experience?

Sincerely,

Dating Myself?

Dear DM:

To paraphrase the Las Vegas slogan, "What Happens In Las Vegas Stays in Las Vegas" – "What Happens in the Past, Stays in the Past."

Discuss things that you do in your current job in the present tense, and things that you did in your past jobs in the past tense. But remember that your current job also has a past, whether regarding committee work, types of patients, certifications, etc. For example, if you've held Job X from May 2001 to the present, and were on a committee at this job from July 2001 to July 2003, it's still past. Or if you worked with SARS patients, (thankfully) it's in the past. Or if you were certified in ACLS in 2000 and haven't recertified, it's in the past

Keeping to this rule will help your résumé be logical and truthful.
