Should I include a photo with my résumé? Sincerely, Camera Bug Dear Camera Bug: Photos cannot be requested at the application stage except in specific situations, such as for some applications for work overseas or when a photo pertains to a bona fide requirement, such as for a position in the performing arts. In the current litigious environment, it's not a good idea to attach a photo even if you want to. The employer may think you are setting them up for a lawsuit in the event that you are not considered for an interview: "You didn't hire me because you know that I am a man/woman, short/tall, fat/skinny, too ethnic/not ethnic enough." But when a photo is required (e.g., for overseas jobs), make sure that the photo is current and appropriate. An example of inappropriate? We received a résumé from a woman who attached a photo of herself posing in a bikini and a pair of stilettos. An example of appropriate? A head shot wherein you are smiling or have a neutral expression – and are clothed. Remember, the photo is attached to the summary of your professional and educational achievements and goals, not to a summary of your likes and dislikes in fashion.
