Dear Cindy – RN + Science Teacher Options

I am an RN with 16 years of experience in NICU, nursery, and mother/baby, as well as nine years of experience as an 8th grade science teacher. I have a Master's in education along with my RN. I am trying to find a job in which I can incorporate both my nursing and teaching experience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose the obvious suggestion with the combination of RN and Master's in education would be to look for didactic or clinical teaching options in an RN, LPN, or health sciences programs; or with a hospital's staff development/education program; or with an organization's health literacy and health promotion programs.

Another thought would be to find out if your school district or one in your area has a program to encourage middle or high school students to enter healthcare professions (such as mentioned in our article Filling the Ranks for the Future), and work in that program.

Also if you have the time and inclination, the combination of maternal-child nursing experience and basic science teaching experience could make you a good fit for doing volunteer work overseas with a group such as Doctors Without Borders.
