Dear Cindy:

For my first career I was an elementary school teacher for 15 years. My second and current career is as a highly successful, nonprofit fundraiser. I've been a fundraiser for over 14 years and, to be honest, it has lost its luster, and my enthusiasm is waning.

I would like to be involved in the healthcare industry, but sadly the medical (nursing, technician) end is not one I'm interested in. Are there careers in healthcare that my previous experience would be of value?

Sincerely,

M

Dear M:

Since you say you want to be involved in the healthcare industry, I assume that your nonprofit experience has been gained outside of healthcare. Or are/were you doing fundraising for a healthcare facility, foundation, etc.? If the experience is with healthcare nonprofits, this would add to your marketability.

Look at the hard and soft skills you have developed, of which some would likely be in the areas of teaching, communication, PR, presentation, sales, motivation, organization, marketing, budgeting, people-management.

Based on these, some areas that you may want to consider are: volunteer management/coordination, medical sales, marketing, patient services, or community/public relations.
