Dear Cindy – Transcriptionist's Job Search

Dear Cindy:

I graduated from a medical transcription program back in March of this year, and I have been unable to find a job. I had a lead on one with Transam Associates, but they wanted me to pay $495 to download their software in order to begin training with them. I wouldn't have a problem with training with them if I didn't have to pay the money. I have begun to wonder if I just wasted my time and money going to school for this, or if I am just looking in the wrong places. If you have any recommendations or suggestions for my dilemma, please contact me to let me know. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

J

Dear J:

I was unfamiliar with the site mentioned, so I checked it out. Personally, I think it's a bit much to pay $495 for training when you're already trained, and then have no guarantee of a job. After all, the site says that those "… who meet our standard rate of accuracy will be the first ones assigned to new accounts we have coming on board." Who knows how many qualified people are currently waiting for accounts, and who knows how many new accounts they get?

In addition to looking for medical transcription jobs on MedHunters, there are a few options:

• Use your network (e.g., fellow students and instructors) to see if anyone knows of any opportunities.
• If your school has a career center and/or offers a placement program for new/recent grads, take advantage of these services.
• Join a group such as the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (formerly the American Association for Medical Transcription) and/or the Medical Transcription Industry Association.
• Not all hospitals outsource, so send out résumés and cover letters to area hospitals, even if they're not advertising … not all jobs are advertised. You can find contact details on the American Hospital Directory website (click "Free Hospital Information," and then do a search by city).
• Check online for companies that provide home transcription (e.g., Webmedx, Inc., AccuScribe, etc.), though experience may be required.

Good luck.
