Dear Joyce – Not Up to Speed After Changes

 

Dear Joyce♦:

Our department has recently gone through some changes and our work has changed significantly. It's taking me a long time to get up to speed – in fact, I'm still not. It's been three months, and I feel that my boss has given up on me. What do I do to convince her that I'm capable of doing what she wants me to do?

Why aren't you up to speed?

Do you need more time or training? Have you consciously or unconsciously been resisting the changes? Are you even interested in the new duties/role? Finally, how do you know that you're capable of performing the new work, particularly since you haven't done it in the three months?

If I were your supervisor, I would also give up on you after three months.

So you have three choices:

• Buckle down and acquire the new skills.
• If your work was good before, talk to your supervisor and see if she can change your job description or transfer you to another area (but don't count on it).
• If you're really unhappy, or can't do the work, find a new job.
