Dear Cindy – Work-from-Home for a Retired Dentist?

Dear Cindy:

I am a retired 43-year-old dentist looking for my next opportunity. I live a long way from anywhere, and was wondering about online opportunities. I finished second in my graduating class, and was a partner in two large, successful practices. There has to be something I am qualified for. Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

E

Dear E:

Sticking with options in the healthcare field – and I won't suggest that you go into the commonly known fields of home transcription or medical billing – there are a few online options that may be of interest, depending on your experience, strengths, and interests:

• Freelance medical editing/writing jobs are typically done from home. Even if you were to be an employee rather than a freelancer, due to the nature of the job, much of the work may be able to be done from home, with teleconferencing or occasional visits to the company's office.
• A university/college/vocational school may have opportunities for instructors or course developers for online healthcare or science courses. This may be able to be done entirely online, or may be chiefly online, with occasional visits to a campus.
• Some companies involved in healthcare recruitment allow for at-home work, with contacts made via phone, email, and/or videoconferencing. Periodic trips to interview applicants or visit client sites may be required.
• There are healthcare-related franchises that you could buy into and manage from your home.

Some other options may involve an at-home component, but wouldn't necessarily be 100% at-home, such as:

• Medical/pharmaceutical sales. Some employers allow home offices, but you would still have to be on the road visiting clients.
• Since you have experience with practice management, you may consider marketing yourself as a consultant in the field. Again, you would have a home office, but would of course have to make site visits.
