Having Faith

Being diagnosed with an incurable disease does not have to be a death sentence.

Having lived with multiple sclerosis for more than 39 years, I have found my faith has helped me live a life full of hope, achievement, and service. That service includes shining light upon God with my writing, and inspiring, encouraging, and helping others to see beyond themselves and whatever adversity they are confronting. Even though I can no long walk or drive or do many of the things I used to do before MS, I am blessed to be a speaker and weekly newspaper Life Style and Devotional columnist. In my life, I struggle to take care of my physical body, and I strive to encourage, inspire and enlighten others.

I have learned life is not all about me. There is more to life than my own personal and physical needs. We are to love and care about the others who populate this planet. My pain is diminished when I concentrate on helping others realize their blessings. Above all, I have come to see that God is in control and my days are in His hands. I shall survive as long as He has more work for me to do, as long as He desires to use me for His glory. In my striving to live for God, I am able to accept the pain that is at times excruciating and that life is not always fair.

Yes, there is more to a person than the physical side of their nature; their spiritual being is often capable of benefiting them as much, or more, than the medicating of their physical body. With my doctor's prescriptions, his diet and rehab suggestions, coupled with my daily Bible reading and prayer time, and a positive attitude, I have found a healthy regime that I follow daily.

I am content with the fact that I may not live as long, or in the exact way I would like, but despite the multiple sclerosis that tugs on my lifeline, I have certainly learned how to enjoy life. And I am finding I am more than I ever was before MS.
