Providing healthcare wherever
needed. ![]()
Governments employ a wide range of healthcare professionals in different capacities and in different environments. In the US: Major Federal employers are the military (whether in active service or the reserves, commissioned or noncommissioned, or civilian capacities) or in the Department of Public Health and Human Services (which includes the Public Health Service Operating Division and the Human Services Operating Division). Healthcare providers are also employed by the State Department (e.g. registered nurses for health assessments and onsite overseas healthcare for their foreign service staff), the FBI (e.g. occupational health nurses), the Department of Agriculture (e.g. nurses for student healthcare programs), the Food and Drug Administration (e.g. nurse consultants), etc. For more information see our article Government Jobs in Healthcare – United States, Worldwide Adventure Awaits, and the Work Environments section on the military. In Canada: The major government healthcare employers are the military and Health Canada and territorial governments (which supply nurses to remote First Nations and Inuit communities). Some other government jobs include: occupational health settings; ministries of education (for school nurses); provincial ministries of health; Corrections Canada (i.e., prison nursing, mental health).
