US Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy ProfessionalsRadiographers: The credential necessary to become a registered is obtained by passing a several national certifying examination. As explained by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT), approximately two-thirds of states, so contact the state in which you would like to work for specifics about what is required to practice. Even in licensed states, the regulatory body will typically accept certification with the ARRT in lieu of a state exam, in order to obtain a license to practice. Nuclear Medicine: The credential necessary to become a registered is obtained by passing a national certifying examinations. Some states have licensing laws for NMTs, and even though the licensing laws vary from state to state, the regulatory body will typically accept certification with the ARRT in lieu of a state exam, in order to obtain a license to practice. The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) credential is also accepted by most states in lieu of a state exam. Contact the state in which you would like to work for specifics about what is required to practice. Sonographers: Sonographers typically obtain American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification, but the ARRT also offers a sonography certification exam. MRI Techs: Currently, no states require MRI Technologists to hold a specific MRI license to practice. Instead, MRI Techs are required to hold a state (or ARRT) license in a primary discipline (e.g., radiography). For more information, contact the licensing body in the state in which you wish to work. CT Techs: Currently, none of the US states require CT Technologists to hold a specific CT license to practice. Radiation Therapists: The credential necessary to become a registered is obtained by passing a national certifying examination. Some US states have licensing laws for radiation therapists. Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy Professionals from Canada or MexicoMedical imaging professionals (radiography, nuclear medicine, sonography, MRI, or CT technology) and radiation therapists must complete the same exams/certifications as described above for US candidates. In the case of ARRT exams, applicants' training programs must be accredited by a body acceptable to the ARRT (see their Certification FAQ), or else the applicants should seek advanced placement in an accredited program. The ARDMS has several routes to exam eligibility. The NMTCB requires that foreign-trained applicants undergo an evaluation to determine whether they are eligible to write the certification exam. Visa Information: Medical imaging professionals and radiation therapists are not covered under NAFTA. A US work visa must be obtained before being allowed entry to the US and employment in the US, and usually sponsorship is required. Please contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate to inquire about obtaining a US work visa. You can also find more information about various types of immigrant and non-immigrant employment visas on the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website and on the State Department.
