US Respiratory Therapists

Respiratory therapists who wish to practice in the United States are required to pass a state-administered national examination. There are two major levels – CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist), which is the basic level, and RRT (Registered Respriratory Therapist), which is the upper level. Each level has its own exam. The CRT exam is a one-part, computer-based, written exam. The RRT exam is in two parts, including a computer-based, written exam and a clinical simulation exam. To write the RRT, one must have already passed the CRT. For further information regarding the exams, please contact the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Currently, all states except Hawaii and Alaska regulate the profession of respiratory therapy.

Respiratory Therapists from Canada or Mexico

The VisaScreen requirement instituted in July 2004 for some healthcare professions does not pertain to respiratory therapists.

As mentioned above for US respiratory therapists, all respiratory therapists who wish to practice in the United States are required to pass a state-administered national examination. For further details, see above, or contact the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Canadian respiratory therapists holding the CSRT's RRT credential need to pass only the clinical simulation part of the exam to earn the NBRC's RRT credential.

VISA Information: Your profession is NOT covered under NAFTA. You are required to have a US work visa before being allowed entry and employment in the US. Sponsorship may be required in some cases. US Embassy or Consulate to inquire about obtaining a US work visa.
