Make Your Online Job Search Work for You, Part 2

Here are some additional tips on making the most of your online job search:

• Take advantage of the online resources offered by HEALTHeCAREERS and MedHunters. A few examples include our Job Alert emails, articles about job searching and interviewing, and ProStyle™, a self-assessment tool available in the My Work Style section of the site.
• The internet has made job applications faster and easier, and employers are more likely to be flooded with résumés. Therefore, tailor your cover letter and résumé for each position to give you a better chance to stand out.
• Don't wait for employers to come to you! If you see a promising position advertised on a job board, don't assume that the employer will dig up your résumé. Send them your cover letter and résumé.
• Control your online presence. Increasingly, employers are researching candidates using search engines, blogs, YouTube, and social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, so posting racy photos or complaining about your current boss could jeopardize your job search. Conduct an online search for your own name, and delete or hide anything that you wouldn't want a potential employer to see. If there is unwanted information about you on individuals' or organizations' websites, contact the person or site administrator(s) and politely request that it be removed.
• Never search for another job at your current place of employment, even during breaks.
• Applying for the same job multiple times will not improve your chances of success. For more information, read Dear Cindy – Job Posted in Two Places.
• Unless you're trying to make a deadline, don't email an interviewer or send in your résumé via cell phone, blackberry, or other mobile device. Your application risks appearing weaker, because you're more likely to make and overlook errors while using such a device.
• Supplement your online job search with more traditional ways of finding work: Network, attend career fairs, and look in the "careers" section of professional publications.
