A Battlefield Doctor & Poet

Canadian Dr. John McCrae (1872–1918) is remembered less for the fact that he was a doctor than for the fact that he wrote the famous World War I poem "In Flanders Fields."

In spring 1915, McCrae was working as a brigade surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres. He wrote this poem after performing a burial service (sometimes required of the surgeons when there was no chaplain available) for his friend, on May 3, 1915:

"In Flanders Fields"

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amidst the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
