Brightening the Lives of Children

Juliet Veal – certified child life specialist and special events and volunteer coordinator at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia.

Because most of her teenage patients were unable to attend their high school proms, Juliet Veal wanted to help them make up for the missed experience. Together with the Atlanta chapter of the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation (an international, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of seriously ill children), Veal organized the first annual Starlight Prom for seriously and chronically ill teenagers. She turned her office into a makeshift boutique with more than 30 bridesmaid's dresses for the teens to choose from. "It was unbelievable," she remembers. "I'd known the kids as patients … it was amazing to see them dancing and having the best time, even the kids with walkers and amputees. At the end of it, all the kids were exchanging phone numbers and crying because they didn't want to leave."

Veal continues to volunteer with the Starlight Children's Foundation, coordinating monthly hospital parties and, currently, planning the sixth annual Starlight Prom.
